Extension Specialist III/Director, Aquaculture/Fisheries Center of Excellence
Salary: $75,000 - $85,000

The School of Agriculture, Fisheries and Human Sciences (SAFHS) at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, an 1890 Land-Grant institution, is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Director for the Center of Excellence in Aquaculture/Fisheries. The Director is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the Center. . The Center of Excellence is a research and Extension Center dedicated to the development and transfer of timely, problem-solving information. The mission of the Center is multi-fold. Through 1890 Evans-Allen and Extension funding, the Center will respond to the research and outreach needs of the limited-resource and socially disadvantaged small fish farmers, pond owners, and 4-H youth whom the university is mission-driven to serve. Utilizing self-generated funding, the Center will respond to immediate and future needs of the state’s aquaculture industry, and fisheries and aquatic resource managers through quality research and outreach programs. The Center will also assist County Extension personnel, as well as state and federal natural resource agencies. The selected individual must have experience in securing extramural funding. Lastly, the Director for the Center will report directly to the Dean and Director of the School.


Plan, administer and coordinate overall activities related to the Aquaculture/Fisheries Center of Excellence. Secure extramural funding to support the Center’s work with the state’s aquaculture and fisheries industry. Assist research and Extension faculty to organize, plan, implement, and evaluate research and Extension programs for limited resource and socially disadvantaged farmers and families, relevant to the aquaculture/fisheries and natural resource industries and the State of Arkansas. Advocate for the mission of SAFHS and the Center to the community at-large, outside constituencies, and UAPB alumni. Develop a Strategic Plan for the Aquaculture/ Fisheries Center of Excellence that is in keeping with the Plans of the School and the University, and which fits within USDA-NIFA’s 5-year Plan-of-Work. Manage and allocate aquaculture/fisheries research and Extension facilities and equipment among researchers and projects, with the approval of the Dean/Director. Working with the Dean and Assistant Deans for Extension/ Outreach and Research, lead the development of the budget and innovative programs within the Center that move the Center toward self-sufficiency. Manage facilities, ponds, equipment, vehicles, materials, and supplies of the Center. Coordinate with the Associate Dean for Global Engagement on types and scope of international programs related to aquaculture/fisheries that are mutually beneficial to the State of Arkansas and international partners. Serve as an ambassador for the Center, the School, and the University. Participate in the development of SAFHS 5-Year Plan of Work and prepare the Center’s Annual Accomplishment reports. Perform other duties and responsibilities assigned by the Dean/Director of SAFHS.

Minimum Qualifications

The Center Director must hold a Ph.D. in Aquaculture/ Fisheries or a related field. Applicants must provide three letters of recommendation, a letter of application addressing the requirements of the position, curriculum vitae, and transcripts from all universities attended.
