Fellow (Post Doc) - Grain Science

Department: 3670010080 Grain Science & Industry

Job no: 509785

Employment type: Post Doc (Term)

Location: Manhattan, Kansas

Categories: Agriculture, Research / Scientific / Grants, Natural / Quantitative Sciences, Entomology, Crop Production, Food Systems

Pay Grade: 001

About This Role:

Kansas State University, Department of Grain Science and Industry is seeking applicants for a Postdoctoral Fellow to study the interactions between stored product insects and sorghum grain after harvest. Sorghum grain has long been used in the United States for animal feed; however, the demand for sorghum grain-based products for human consumption is growing rapidly as it is gluten free and it contains unique phenolic compounds that may have nutraceutical properties. Like other grains and products derived from grain, sorghum is susceptible to feeding damage by a range of stored product insects after it is harvested, yet little is known about its susceptibility to these pests and it is not known what physical or chemical characteristics influence its susceptibility to insect feeding. Primary responsibilities will include determining whether common phenolics found in sorghum negatively impact stored product insect populations and identifying other physical or chemical properties associated with resistance to these insect pests. Other research objectives can be developed based on the skills and interests of the selectee. Additional responsibilities will include preparing progress reports and manuscripts, presenting results at scientific meetings, and maintaining research equipment and facilities.
