The Forestry Youth Education Academic Coordinator will oversee the Forestry Institute for Teachers program and develop a comprehensive forest education program preparing California’s youth to tackle future forest management needs. The academic coordinator will serve as a liaison between UC ANR academics, other credentialed educators, forestry professionals and the general public to provide education on forest resilience, forest management, career opportunities, and community resilience. The incumbent will also support the development and distribution of research-based information to address ongoing workforce capacity issues throughout the state. Additional responsibilities include identifying extramural fund development opportunities and developing a system to track project performance.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

• Collaborate with environmental education centers and outdoor camps to develop and deliver new K-12 forestry education trainings.
• Evaluate and identify opportunities which lead towards increased youth engagement in the Professional Forestry and Natural Resource workforce.
• Manage Forestry Institute for Teachers (forestryinstitute.org) education program.
• Collaborate with current education curriculum (i.e. Ag in the Classroom, Project WET, California FireWorks, 4-H, PLT, Project WILD, etc) and local education departments (i.e. Office of Education, school districts, etc) to identify relevant training needs and ensure environmental curriculum meets or exceeds local district and California State Standards.

• Evaluate accessibility and utilization of current forestry recruitment programs and improve engagement within previously underserved communities
• Track project performance, gather data and report outcomes.
• Assist in the identification and submission of extramural fund development opportunities.

Requirements:

Education: An earned Master’s degree or other advanced degree in Forestry, Education, Natural Resources, or related field is required at time of appointment.

Additional Requirements

• General knowledge of forest health, forest management or ecology; and/or general knowledge of K-12 environmental education curricula.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Experience using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint), databases and web-based tools (calendar/documents).
• Ability to organize and prioritize activities to meet programmatic work plans.
• Experience working independently and as a team member.
• Ability to travel to locations within California to host workshops.

This position is a definite term appointment. The position is a one-year renewable term appointment (up to 3 years) with a merit cycle every two years. The performance in the position will be evaluated annually. The position will be extended based on the continued need for the position, performance and availability of funding.
