The Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences, University of Manitoba invites applications for a tenured appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor and for a term position of up to five years as Head, Department of Food and Human Nutritional Sciences, Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences, effective January 1, 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The Department of Food and Human Nutritional Sciences offers undergraduate and graduate programs in both Food Science and Human Nutritional Sciences. The Food Science undergraduate program is approved by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), and the Human Nutritional Sciences undergraduate program is accredited by the Partnership for Dietetic Education and Practice.
The Department is currently developing a new Masters of Applied Human Nutrition (MAHN) program to replace the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority-led dietetic internship program. This combined course and practical experience program will qualify students to write the Canadian Dietetic Registration Examination (CDRE). The proposed 1-year MAHN program will launch in September 2022.
The Head holds an administrative position, supervising 21 FTE academic staff, 12 support staff, and participates in the teaching, research and service activities of the Department and the Faculty. The Department has an active research program (last fiscal year ~ $3.1M in funding) and offers courses of study leading to baccalaureate (current enrollment ~ 305), M.Sc. (current enrollment~ 42) and Ph.D. degrees (current enrollment~ 30). Department agreements with Universities in China contribute to the Department’s diverse student body. The Head is responsible to the Dean of the Faculty. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent in food science, nutritional sciences or a related field, and must have an accomplished research record in nutrition or food science. Candidates must have vision and leadership skills, be an excellent communicator, have a commitment to excellence in teaching and research, support collegiality and collaboration, and continue to foster transdisciplinary activities across University faculties, government and non-government stakeholders, including the broader agri-food system. The Head will be an advocate for department programs and their respective recognitions and accreditations. As a member of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences Executive team, the Head will contribute toward strategic management of resources and engagement with external stakeholders.
