The Pennsylvania State University College of Engineering seeks a collaborative and visionary leader who is deeply committed to an interdisciplinary approach to research and education to serve as the next head of the School of Engineering, Design, Technology, and Professional Programs. Applications, inquiries, and nominations are invited.
The School of Engineering Design, Technology, and Professional Programs (SEDTAPP) at Penn State brings together designers, leaders, entrepreneurs, humanitarians, technologists, educators and researchers to deliver unrivaled engineering education, research opportunities, and professional skills. Through active, collaborative, project-based, and professionally-oriented classroom experiences, SEDTAPP programs partner faculty, students, and industry in the study of real-life engineering problems, teaching students to solve these problems with innovative solutions and preparing them for the competitive, global workplaces of the future. Known as a powerhouse in engineering design, SEDTAPP inspires faculty to think outside of the box – in their courses, their research, and their service. The new head will build upon the considerable strengths of this highly interdisciplinary and collaborative school to further extend Penn State's impact on the next generation of leaders in industry, government, academia, and beyond who are revolutionizing design, accelerating innovation, and transforming engineering.
SEDTAPP is one of the 13 departments and schools within the highly-ranked Penn State College of Engineering. Within the College, SEDTAPP is known as the school where innovation is the norm and new ideas can take root. Annually over 1,500 undergraduate students enroll in its engineering design and First-year Engagement courses and almost 350 enroll in the school's minors and certificate programs. More than 75 graduate students enroll in SEDTAPP's masters and graduate certificate programs. SEDTAPP will soon move into the new West 2 Building, slated for opening in Fall 2022, as part of the college's master facilities plan. They work collaboratively across engineering disciplines, throughout the University, with colleagues at other colleges and universities, and with industry professionals, to push the frontiers of innovation and education and understand how engineering can be situated within society. Under the leadership of Dean Justin Schwartz, the College has outlined a bold vision for the future emphasizing impact on society and embracing the challenges facing humankind, redefining multidisciplinary activity, and engaging globally. The College's priorities include expanding research and graduate education, taking a national leadership role on equity and inclusion, and implementing a new master plan for buildings and infrastructure. As a member of the College’s leadership team, the SEDTAPP head will play a critical role in the realization of the College’s vision.
Reporting to the dean, the head is responsible for visioning, strategic planning, operations, finances, faculty affairs, academic and research programs, external relations, and fundraising in support of the school's aspirations. The next head will provide visionary leadership to guide the fulfillment of the school's new strategic plan; advance diversity, equity, and inclusion; recruit, develop and retain faculty; nurture and develop interdisciplinary collaboration within the school and across the College of Engineering and the University; advocate for the school; cultivate strong relationships with the Commonwealth campuses to engage faculty and support students; and enhance the visibility, brand, and reputation of SEDTAPP. The new head will support and nurture an environment where creativity and innovation thrive.
In achieving these objectives, the next head must be a collaborative leader and possess the leadership skills, strategic capacity, and creative spirit to advance the school. Additional essential qualifications include successful administrative experience in a university, industry or governmental research environment, a strong record of advancing equity and inclusion, the communication and interpersonal skills and deep intellectual curiosity to engage and support a diverse set of programs and a strong record of forging interdisciplinary partnerships. The new head must possess the scholarly record required to merit a tenured appointment as a full professor in the College.
