Instructor of Low Brass

The School of Performing Arts at South Dakota State University invites applications for an Instructor of Low Brass who will share a passion for providing exceptional musical training to undergraduate students.

The candidate will have the opportunity to work in a collegial, vibrant, and supportive environment. The School is housed in the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center, a newly constructed facility with outstanding spaces dedicated to performance, rehearsal, and instruction in the disciplines of music, theatre, and dance. South Dakota State University is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music to provide curricula leading to undergraduate degrees in music and music education.

This is a 9-month, full-time, benefit eligible position with an anticipated date of employment of August 2023. The position is supervised by the Director of the School of Performing Arts.


  • Teach applied trombone, euphonium and tuba.
  • Teach a brass methods course for music education majors.
  • Teach courses in at least one additional area of study from the following: music appreciation, music technology, and/or commercial music/audio production.
  • Teach courses face to face on-campus or through emerging modes of content delivery as assigned.
  • Support undergraduate research and creative activity by preparing students to enter competitions or involve themselves in other related activities.
  • Develop positive and supportive relationships with students, colleagues, and external stakeholders.
  • Engage in professional development opportunities with affiliated professional organizations as appropriate.


  • A Master’s degree in the discipline of music is required, with at least one graduate degree in music performance with a specialization in trombone, euphonium, and/or tuba.
  • Experience teaching trombone, euphonium, or tuba in higher education.
  • Evidence of the ability to teach in at least one secondary area of study listed under responsibilities section.
  • Evidence of strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Sponsorship is not available for this position. Must be eligible to work in the U.S.


  • Demonstrated success in the ability to recruit and retain music students in a higher education setting.
  • Experience in teaching brass methods.
  • Performance experience in both classical and jazz/commercial idioms.
  • A doctorate in the field of music.
