JOB SUMMARY:

Enforces agricultural regulations governing sale and shipment of plants and detection and management of exotic and invasive pests through inspections, records reviews, and public outreach and education. Assists with early detection of plant pests and pathogens that could cause substantial economic damage. Serves an assigned territory of several counties and in locations throughout the State. Performs other duties as assigned.

JOB DUTIES:

50% - Essential - Conducts surveys and inspections to determine compliance with the Federal Plant Protection Act, the SC Crop Protection Act, and other Federal and State legislation. Supports ongoing plant protection, quarantine, and eradication efforts. Surveys nurseries, forests, farms, and apiaries to detect plant pests and pathogens. Inspects nurseries, greenhouses, lumber yards, and other agricultural sites for issuing licenses, export permits, compliance agreements, or other necessary shipping documents. Conduct surveys and inspections to detect plant pests and pathogens of concern as specified in the Cooperative Agricultural Pest Survey (CAPS), Farm Bill, or other programs' work plans.

25% - Essential - Conduct pest programs in assigned district continuously and as they arise. Pest programs requiring heightened attention include but are not limited to the Sweet Potato Weevil trapping program and the USDA-APHIS-PPQ Witchweed program.

15% - Essential - Participates in educational and public outreach activities, including home shows, mass-media appearances and classroom presentations for the Department of Plant Industry and in cooperation with other elements of the University and other State and Federal agencies. Reporting: Submits appropriate reports detailing the findings of each inspection or investigation.

10% - Essential - Inspects and reviews business records and physical facilities at commercial nurseries, greenhouses, and farms for compliance with the Federal Plant Protection Act, the SC Crop Protection Act, and other Federal and State legislation and private pesticide applicators for compliance with State and Federal regulations. Conducts interviews, retains samples, obtains affidavits, and reviews records for physical and documentary evidence.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education - High School Diploma or equivalent and experience conducting investigations or performing other law enforcement duties. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required work experience.

Licenses - Drivers License Class D normal

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

Education - Bachelor's Degree in Horticulture or other Agriculture or Science related field, or commensurate experience.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
No Supervisory Duties - Not responsible for supervising employees.

No Budget Responsibilities - No fiscal responsibility for the department's budget.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Education - Bachelor's Degree in Horticulture or other Agriculture or Science related field, or commensurate experience.

Overnight Travel

WORK SCHEDULE:

Standard Hrs: 37.5; Expected Salary Range: ($ 41,800.00 - $ 45,000.00)

JOB LOCATION:

This position's home office will be the Pee Dee Rec station in Florence, SC. However, this position covers a territory of 11 counties. It is preferred that the employee lives within the territory. The coverage area includes: Chesterfield, Darlington, Dillon, Florence, Horry, Kershaw, Lancaster, Lee, Marlboro, Marion, and Sumter.
