Department Chair, Professor of Biology

The Department of Biology at Jackson State University is accepting applications for the Department Chair, Professor of Biology position. The responsibilities of the Chair are to provide visionary leadership and overall management of the Department of Biology while maintaining collegiality. The Chair, a senior faculty administrator, promotes teaching, research, and service excellence. Therefore, the position demands a high-level commitment and professional duties.


  • Must have a doctorate and broad experience in any area of Biological Science
  • Must have academic credentials that represent teaching, research, and service/outreach excellence


  • Must have experience as and be eligible for a tenured, full professor and Chair at the time of appointment
  • Must have experience with accreditation processes, personnel management expertise, and recruitment skills


Must possess strong academic networks and meet eligibility requirements to work in the United
States when the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the term of employment.


  • Understanding of the breadth and depth of different departmental constituencies, e.g., undergraduate and graduate studies
  • Understanding of current trends in higher education and university governing policies.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and effective communication with faculty, staff, stakeholders, parents, and students
  • Leadership, administrative and organizational skills
  • Budget/resource management ability
  • Ability to secure and sustain grant/contract funding for research, student training program, outreach, and development


The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing academic and administrative leadership to the Department
  • Providing leadership for faculty development, program development and assessment, grantsmanship, long-range planning, budgeting, public relations, and recruitment and retention of diverse students and faculty
  • Supervising and evaluating personnel
  • Serving as part of the College’s leadership team and on university committees
  • Developing and maintaining community and business partnerships
  • Serving as a liaison to administration, alumni, and the community
  • Addressing student issues
  • Maximizing and enhancing the use of space and physical facilities
