About This Role:
The Medical Techonolgist provides timely, accurate laboratory results by following Lafene laboratory procedures, and applicable state and federal requirements. To update, maintain, and problem solve laboratory information systems (LIS). Including interfaces for instruments, reference laboratories, faxing programs, and Lafene Health Center EMR.
Analyzes laboratory specimens and reviews, records accurate results in hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, microbiology, and serology in order to provide the physician a diagnostic tool in the identification and treatment of disease. This is accomplished by utilizing technical expertise, following instructions, interpreting scientific data, and knowing normal ranges and corrective measures to be taken when the test system is out of range. Sustain quality control programs throughout the clinical laboratory in order to prove the various laboratory tests are accurate through the tabulating of control data to demonstrate the efficiency of the quality control program. Having the math skills to compile, tabulate and organize data for periodic review.
Laboratory technological liaison between administration, LIS, and EMR providers. Troubleshoot LIS and EMR interface issues. Maintain lab database and updates. Establish and maintain written LIS guidelines and practices for lab employees. Train coworkers in software programs and changes.
Collects, processes, transports, and properly identifies laboratory specimens from patients in order to provide a high quality specimen for testing by screening specimens for quality, using safe phlebotomy techniques to minimize inherent risks to phlebotomist as well as patient, and recognizing the need for patient orientation and preparation.
Records and delivers laboratory tests results to in-house medical staff and outside consulting physicians in order to insure concise and timely reporting. Use of technical knowledge and independent judgment when interpreting test results from reference labs, precise transcribing and computer skills, and coordinating workload and reporting. Following federal and state recording requirements. Educate and instruct patients, physicians, clinic support staff, and laboratory assistants in order to assure high-quality health care. Research and implement new and approved procedures and equipment. Offer professional and evidenced-based judgment when engaging with difficult patient situations.
Establish and carry out the installation, operation, and maintenance of equipment, and periodically supervise the performance and quality control of laboratory testing and supervise other laboratory personnel in the operation of a specific department(s) within the clinical laboratory in order to assist and gain experience in the overall medical laboratory functions. Monitor and calibrate the performance of specialized instruments and equipment in order to guarantee the reliability of each individual measurement by using physics and chemistry knowledge when calibrating instruments, ascertaining underlying problems when troubleshooting, and possessing the ability to recognize pitfalls, problems, and limitations of lab data as well as the merits of proper equipment maintenance and methodology.
Perform other duties as assigned, but not limited to:
a. Maintain infection control and continuous quality improvement throughout the laboratory
b. Occasionally attend and/or present continuing education sessions.
c. Fulfill Lafene committees responsibilities.
d. Provide professional assistance relevant to the position to promote goodwill in and among the campus community. Work performance will reflect a positive attitude toward all clientele by utilizing excellent communication skills, maintaining confidentiality, dressing appropriately, and adhering to work schedules. Participates cooperatively and objectively in quality management studies and peer review. Laboratory tasks will be reviewed periodically by appropriate governing authorities to ensure timeliness, accuracy, and accountability.

What You'll Need to Succeed:
• B.S. or B.A. from accredited four-year college/university in chemical, laboratory, and biological sciences
• Completion of 12 months in an approved medical technology or CLS internship program
• Basic computer knowledge to include simple hardware setup, program interface requirements, database creation and maintenance, and problem-solving
• Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment
• National Certification as medical technologist or clinical laboratory scientist.
