Nies Endowed Chair in Enterprise Management

The Ness School of Management and Economics at South Dakota State University (SDSU) seeks a highly collaborative colleague who is internationally recognized for research, teaching, and outreach that advance knowledge in enterprise management, and who can lead the school’s commitment to deepen our students’ thinking about enterprise management and to expose our students more broadly to corporate innovation. The Ness School, which includes approximately 30 full-time faculty members and a team of academic advisors, embodies an intellectual philosophy that economics and quantitative analysis are foundational to thriving in and critically assessing a modern global economy. In keeping with the land-grant mission of the university, the school is the premier source for economics and business intelligence in the region. The school engages its stakeholders in the classroom, through scholarship, and through outreach—formally through SDSU Extension and otherwise. The school is a unit of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

The Ness School enjoys generous philanthropic support for faculty development in the form of endowed chairs, professorships, and faculty-scholar appointments. To this end, the current SDSU Bold and Blue comprehensive campaign—the university’s third and largest fund-raising effort—endeavors to raise a half of a billion dollars to support the university.

The Ness School invites applications and nominations for the position of the Nies Endowed Chair in Enterprise Management. A $2 million Nies endowment supports the Nies Endowed Chair program including the potential for summer salary, as well as program and student research and creative activity support. This is a tenure-track position at the associate or full professor level, full-time, 9 months per contract year, and benefits eligible. The position carries a 3-2 teaching course load, but the initial teaching assignment is negotiable depending on the candidate’s disciplinary strengths and research portfolio. A protocol is in place to enable course release where externally funded research provides alternative support. Research outcomes associated with this position, which the school’s standards document precisely specifies, must satisfy the academic standards the AACSB associates with its faculty-status classification, Scholarly Academic.

The Ness School seeks a scholar with a strong record of nationally or internationally recognized research in enterprise management; someone who demonstrates excellence in teaching, mentoring, and outreach across and outside the university. The ideal candidate participates actively in inter- and multi-disciplinary efforts across campus and develops productive and lasting relationships between the university and public- and private-sector entities, including corporate enterprises in Brookings and the region more broadly. This position is supervised by the Director of the Ness School of Management & Economics with an anticipated start date of August of 2022.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Nies Endowed Chair in Enterprise Management at South Dakota State University will:

  • Present a strong record of effective research, teaching, and outreach outcomes.
  • Report to the Director of the Ness School of Management and Economics.
  • Maintain high research productivity resulting regularly in peer-reviewed, scholarly publications in top-tier academic journals, grant funding, and presentations at national and/or international forums that tightly align with the chair’s academic discipline.
  • Lead with exceptional pedagogy in the classroom and undergraduate- and graduate-student mentorship, and faculty development (of those faculty members engaged in related areas of applied research, scholarly activity, and teaching).
  • Engage the school’s external stakeholders, transferring—through webinars, public lectures, and roundtable discussions, for example—new knowledge and applied understanding of enterprise management and corporate innovation more broadly.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The Nies Endowed Chair in Enterprise Management at South Dakota State University must:

  • Hold a Ph.D. in management or a related business field by application date.
  • Present a strong record of effective research, teaching, and outreach outcomes.
  • Communicate effectively with diverse audiences on and off campus.
  • Demonstrate excellent organizational, time-management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Contribute meaningfully to shared governance across the university.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE/CAPABILTIES:

The Nies Endowed Chair in Enterprise Management at South Dakota State University:

  • Is recognized nationally or internationally for research, teaching, and outreach outcomes that meaningfully advance knowledge in the fields of enterprise management and corporate innovation, broadly defined.
  • Participates actively in inter- and multi-disciplinary efforts across campus, collaborating with colleagues on research, curriculum designs, and outreach efforts that raise the profile and stature of enterprise-management programming on campus.
  • Ability to develop productive and lasting relationships between the university and public- and private-sector entities, including other higher-learning institutions, government and nonprofit agencies, and private enterprises such corporate stakeholders in Brookings and the region more broadly.
  • Ability to effectively transfer their deep knowledge of enterprise management to undergraduate and graduate students through Ness School courses pertaining to business and management analytics, including, for example, advanced business decision science, organizational management, and other such courses in the school’s curriculum plan, which the efforts of a university business-analytics taskforce currently inform.

THE NESS SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT AND ECONOMICS:

The Ness School, in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, includes approximately 30 full-time faculty members and a team of undergraduate academic advisors. The school embodies an intellectual philosophy that economics and quantitative analysis are foundational to thriving in and critically assessing a modern global economy; students who major in business economics, entrepreneurial studies, or agricultural business complete a comprehensive suite of business courses, including those in our 42-credit management and economics core.

The Ness School of Management and Economics offers students a high-quality education and excellent job-placement opportunities. Graduates hold leadership and management positions across the northern Great Plains, Midwest, and nationally in banking and finance, processing and manufacturing management, energy and bioenergy, and food and agribusiness management, and in policy, oversight and regulation; and many are leaders in the broader innovation and entrepreneurship community.

The Ness School is in the process of securing AACSB accreditation, managing significant enrollment growth in its majors, and balancing new opportunities in core business fields—including enterprise management and innovation—with its traditional strengths in economics and quantitative analysis. The school embraces interdisciplinary and interprofessional collaboration in research, teaching, community engagement, and extension work—in some cases, formally, for the school’s faculty members who hold SDSU Extension appointments. The school enrolls approximately 800 undergraduate majors, including more than 500 students who major in business economics and more than 200 students who major in agricultural business, a degree conferred by the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences. The school also offers an undergraduate degree in economics, which includes upper-level coursework in mathematical economics, econometrics, and field areas in, for example, international economics, environmental and resource economics, public policy, and agricultural policy.

Additionally, the school offers a master’s degree in economics that includes two program options: an economic-theory option that requires courses in advanced microeconomics, advanced macroeconomics, econometrics, and research methods, emphasizing applied economic research in the form of graduate thesis; and a business-economics option that requires courses in managerial economics, advanced business decision science, financial management, marketing strategy and analytics, and a capstone experience that blends corporate finance, entrepreneurship, and marketing analytics and potentially collaborates with industry.

The Ness School operates within a rich and supportive corporate-enterprise ecosystem. For example, Brookings is home to Daktronics (DAKT; NASDAQ), 3M (MMM; NYSE), and Larson Manufacturing (Fortune Brands, FBHS; NYSE).
