OSU Extension Educator, 4-H Youth Development
Salary: $38,004 - $63,036

Candidates must be willing to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:  The Ohio State University Extension (OSUE) seeks an Educator to work collaboratively with county, region and state teams of OSUE professionals and with local agency leaders and volunteers. This includes implementing and supporting a comprehensive volunteer system through identification, selection, orientation, training, utilizing, recognizing, and evaluating of adult and youth volunteers to support local 4-H delivery methods (e.g. community clubs, after-school clubs, camps, school enrichment, etc.). The Educator will be responsible for a broad range of duties including, but not limited to: Provide guidance and/or leadership for 4-H Youth Development programming targeted to local and regional needs. Participate in county stewardship activities. Utilize appropriate methods, both formal and informal, of community assessment to identify educational needs and opportunities of local community. Design, implement, teach, and evaluate educational programming, based on these needs, to groups and individuals comprised of adults and/or youth. Design and implement a resident and/or day camp program in collaboration with teen camp counselors and adult staff. Work with the county junior and senior fair boards in supporting the county fair. The Educator may be required to replicate and adhere to existing youth programs that meet the needs of their local community. Plan and conduct local and area educational events to increase 4-H members’ subject matter knowledge & skills and build their leadership, citizenship, & life skills. The Educator will develop promotional material, work with and/or lead committees and volunteers, and establish and maintain partnerships within the community that support the achievement of the program goals and actively work to diversify program participation consistent with OSU Extension’s AA/EEO policies and procedures. The Educator evaluates educational programs and dissemination methods, as well as, utilizes existing evaluation instruments to evaluate the teaching effectiveness, program quality and results of local programs. Track diversity among clientele and learners to ensure equal access to programs and facilities without regard to age, race, creed, color, handicap, sex, sexual orientation, developmental disability, national origin, marital status, arrest or non-program related conviction record. Participate in discussions with county representatives concerning program funding. May also be responsible for securing external funds to support local programming. Participate as a member of county, multi-county, and/or state Extension teams to further the overall mission, vision and values of both Ohio State University Extension and 4-H.

  • Program implementation and teaching to groups and individual. Work with volunteers and staff to plan and conduct local and area educational events (e.g. evaluation days, speaking contests, livestock quality assurance, etc.) to increase 4-H members’ subject matter knowledge & skills and build their leadership, citizenship, & life skills. In partnership with many local agencies and county departments develop a dynamic, county-based 4-H youth development program that addresses the county’s most urgent youth development needs, promotes quality youth-adult partnerships, leads to qualitative outcomes and is representative of the diversity of the county. Convene and facilitate community forums and trainings related to topics of youth development. Integrate 4-H programming into larger-scale county youth development initiatives to reinforce Extension’s expertise and expand 4-H members’ opportunities to learn from and with others. Design and implement a resident and/or day camp program in collaboration with teen camp counselors and adult staff. Create and support strategies to engage teens. Plan and implement leadership and citizenship opportunities that target this population (e.g. teen leadership clubs, youth boards, camp counselors, junior fair board, CARTEENS, etc.). Conduct annual evaluations on selected aspects of the local 4-H programming efforts to include as a part of the OSU Extension reporting system.
  • Provide state-wide specialization in an appropriate 4-H Youth Development area. Provide expertise in the development, enhancement, and support for statewide Extension and 4-H programming, including active participation in a state 4-H Design Team. Approximately 10% of professional time is to be dedicated to statewide efforts. Work collaboratively with Extension educators in all program areas (Agriculture & Natural Resources, Community Development, and Family and Consumer Sciences), where interdisciplinary efforts are needed to meet broad issues or carry out major programming efforts.
  • Implement and support a comprehensive volunteer system through identification, selection, orientation, training, utilizing, recognizing, and evaluating of adult and youth volunteers to support local 4-H delivery methods (e.g. community clubs, after-school clubs, camps, school enrichment, etc.). Provide leadership for the development and support of a 4-H volunteer advisory committee and other related volunteer committees that develop and enhance the educational experience of 4-H youth within the various delivery methods. Provide orientation and training for volunteers that will enhance their ability to (1) develop and implement experientially-based experiences for 4-H members within a variety of delivery methods; (2) build youth development knowledge and skills with volunteers and youth and (3) support quality youth-adult partnerships.
  • Work with the county junior and senior fair boards in supporting the county fair. Serve as a community source for youth development and volunteer expertise, including 4-H philosophy and procedures, related to implementing a positive youth development program and in addressing community needs requiring a multi-programmatic approach. Enhance program development and the outreach/engagement of youth through collaborative relationships with community-based youth agencies/organizations, including schools, non-profit agencies and faith based groups. Identify and pursue funding and leadership opportunities to enhance the scope and reach of 4-H programming as well as create new partnerships for Extension. May also be responsible for securing external funds to support local programming. Promote OSU Extension and 4-H Youth Development with local 4-H families, volunteers elected officials, and other community partners through newsletters, websites, press releases, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS:  REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: An earned bachelor's or master’s degree at the time of hire is required.  Preference will be given to candidates with a degree in Youth Development or other educationally-related area (examples are: Communications, Family Relations and Human Development, Recreation, Sociology, Psychology, Education including Agriculture, Extension, Elementary, Secondary, Family and Consumer Sciences and Physical).  Must be able to utilize a variety of teaching methods to deliver program content to diverse groups of learners. Knowledge and/or the ability to learn concepts, processes, ideas, and methods of 4-H. Experience effectively assessing, replicating and teaching research-based educational programs to diverse audiences. Experience in building and maintaining relationships with various group of individuals, including peers, support staff, volunteers, and local committees, in a effort to achieve common programming goals. Basic computer skills required.  DESIRED EXPERIENCE:  Experience with livestock and positive youth development around livestock topics. Prior experience with budget management. Experience in the organizing, implementing and evaluating of programs. The successful candidate will have strong written and oral communication skills and experience in working with diverse clientele and organizations.  Demonstrated success in working as part of a team and initiating collaborative partnerships is sought.  Leadership ability and strong teaching and subject matter expertise in at least one area of agriculture is necessary.  Candidates must be willing to work flexible hours with a minimum of supervision.  Internal and external applicants for positions are also required to accurately self-disclose all criminal convictions when they apply.  Background checks will be conducted on internal and external final candidates.  Final candidate offer is contingent upon the university’s verification of credentials and other information required by law and/or university policies or practices based upon the criminal background check.
