OSU Extension Educator, Agriculture and Natural Resources
Salary: $38,004 - $63,036

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Providing guidance and/or leadership for Agriculture and Natural Resources programming targeted to local and area needs. Utilize appropriate methods, both formal and informal, of community assessment to identify educational needs and opportunities of local community. Design, implement and teach educational programming, based on these needs, to groups and individuals comprised of adults and/or youth. May also convene and facilitate community coalitions focused on those needs. The Educator may be required to replicate and adhere to existing programs that meet the needs of their local community. The Educator will develop promotional material, work with and/or lead committees and volunteers, and establish and maintain partnerships within the community that support the achievement of the program goals. The Educator evaluates educational programs and dissemination methods, as well as, utilizes existing evaluation instruments to evaluate the teaching effectiveness, program quality and results of local programs. Participate in discussions with county representatives concerning program funding and may be responsible for the management of the county budget. May also be responsible for securing external funds to support local programming. Participate as a member of county, multi-county, and/or state Extension teams to further the overall mission, vision and values of both Ohio State University Extension and Agriculture and Natural Resources.

This position is located in Wood County, Ohio.

· Plan, teach, deliver, disseminate, and evaluate educational programs and applied research on relevant local issues such as agronomic crops, home and commercial horticulture, integrated pest management, water quality, food safety, natural resources, rural economic development, biotechnology, agricultural profitability, and alternative agricultural commodities. Wood County's agriculture industry includes agronomy, forage crops, dairy and livestock, produce markets, and vegetable crops; Give direction and/or leadership to the development of pro-active educational programs using innovative educational methods; Maintain a high level of visibility and facilitate communications with a wide range of clientele including traditional and non-traditional learners, elected officials, agricultural and non-agricultural stakeholders, and environmental and special interest groups to promote the understanding of agriculture and natural resource issues; Ensure a diversity among potential clientele and learners and equal access to programs and facilities without regard to age, race, creed, color, handicap, sex, sexual orientation, developmental disability, national origin, marital status, arrest or non-program related conviction record.

· Develop effective advisory committees. Work closely with local advisory committees, commodity groups and volunteers to conduct needs assessment and priority setting to determine emphasis of educational programs; Serve as an educational advisor and liaison for the Ohio State University Extension and the University to appropriate public issue and program related organizations. Represent OSU Extension and the University with federal, state and local agencies and educational institutions at the local community level; Identify, recruit and develop the volunteer leadership necessary to carry out relevant parts of their programming; Provide volunteer management, educational training and program development to the Shelby County Master Gardener Volunteer Program; Work cooperatively with Extension Advisory Committee to plan and conduct educational programs.

· Maintain a program of individual professional improvement in selected subject areas; Be an effective team player. Work collaboratively with Extension educators in all program areas, (FCS, ANR, 4H, CD) to foster a culture of interdisciplinary work that is needed to impact broad issues or carry out major programming efforts.

· Provide a minimum of 10% statewide specialization in a specialization appropriate area (to be selected) to the area, and state Extension professionals.

QUALIFICATIONS: An earned bachelor's or master’s degree at the time of hire is required. Preference will be given to candidates with a degree in Agriculture or other educationally-related area (examples are: natural resources, animal sciences, environmental sciences, or horticulture). Must be able to utilize a variety of teaching methods to deliver program content to diverse groups of learners. Entry level knowledge and/or the ability to learn concepts, processes, ideas, and methods of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Experience effectively assessing, replicating and teaching research-based educational programs to diverse audiences. Experience in building and maintaining relationships with various group of individuals, including peers, support staff, volunteers, and local committees, in an effort to achieve common programing goals. DESIRED EXPERIENCE: Prior experience with forage crops, dairy and livestock production, forestry, woodland management, fruit & vegetable crops and budget management. Experience in the organizing, implementing and evaluating of programs. The successful candidate will have strong written and oral communication skills and experience in working with diverse clientele and organizations. Demonstrated success in working as part of a team and initiating collaborative partnerships is sought. Leadership ability and strong teaching and subject matter expertise in at least one area of agriculture is necessary. Candidates must be willing to work flexible hours with a minimum of supervision.
