About This Role:

The Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (KSVDL) within the College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking applicants for a Research Assistant in the Rabies Laboratory. The primary tasks for this position will to be to help in the processing room and client service area. The personnel may also conduct test in the rabies laboratory including the performance of rabies antibody analyses on human and animal sera including serum neutralization and ELISA assays, the interpretation and reporting of serological and diagnostic results and maintaining the quality of test results if time for cross training allows. The person in this position will also assist with program operations including monitoring quality control data, accuracy of test result entry, SOP preparation and necessary updates.

Duties / Responsibilities:

Rabies Serology pre-analytical work including: receiving all packages, opening packages, organizing samples, pour off of samples (human and animal blood/CSF samples), detailed data entry of test submissions and assignment of LIMS accession number, rack and data entry verification, pre-testing procedures (heat inactivation and sample storage); assist with student training, scheduling, and questions; lead essential pre-analytical processes. Customer Service: Assisting clients via phone, fax, and email; Provide assistance with clients concerning test submissions, result interpretations, rabies vaccination protocols, and turnaround time; contacting clients due to errors on test submissions.

Support for Rabies Serological Assays: Autoclaving glassware, water, and waste; washing dishes, inventory control and stocking of supplies, preparing in-house reagents, compiling daily/weekly/monthly required documentation for review, ensuring workspaces are in working order, and performing general housekeeping.

Preventative maintenance and Quality Systems: Preforming daily, weekly, and monthly internal preventative maintenance of equipment and annual post pipettes service internal calibrations; ensuring all equipment in use is in date and in working order. Perform quality assignments and quality control documentation needed for the Rabies Laboratory to stay in compliance with regulations, assist with SOP updates, and Corrective actions reports.

All other duties that are assigned (not limited to): assist with analytical and post- analytical rabies serology procedures, assist with rabies diagnostic samples or ELISA assay, and cross-training.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor of Science in biology or related science.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in organizing projects, processing and client service.

• Some experience in a clinical laboratory environment.

• Experience managing students or supervising or training.

• Excellent written and oral, interpersonal, organization and communication skills.

• Competent computer skills.
