About this Role:
The Department of Diagnostic Medicine/Pathobiology within the College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking applicants for a Research Assistant. This position will support ongoing research projects as needed and will also support ongoing training programs (high containment research) as needed. Good interpersonal, organizational, and laboratory skills are required.

Duties / Responsibilities:

• Assisting researchers studying zoonotic viral diseases in vitro and in vivo including work with large animals and mosquitoes.
• Assisting in training students and researchers to conduct non-zoonotic and zoonotic research in the high containment environment.
• Conducting other research and training activities as needed, for example hosting subject matter experts and visiting scholars.
• Managing and training student workers.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

• B.S. in animal science, biology, entomology, microbiology, or other related science

Preferred Qualifications:

• Basic knowledge of insects, viruses, animal research and/or high containment research
• Basic knowledge of a learning management system such as Canvas, and basic computer skills such as Zoom, PowerPoint, Word, Excel
• Ability to manage and prioritize personal work tasks and undergraduate student employees within the confines of time and available personnel
• Research experience with either mosquitoes and/or animals in a research setting
• Virology experience in working with viruses for research
• Knowledge in basic laboratory procedures
• Experience training students in a laboratory setting (various ages and skill levels)
• Ability to organize presentations by subject matter experts and other events for various educational purposes

Other Requirements:

• Ability to pass a baseline physical
• Ability to wear personal protective equipment required for work in BSL-3 laboratories
• This job has potential for safety hazard exposures and infectious disease exposure
• Protective vaccines will be offered as needed
• Ability to lift/maneuver large animals in a high containment environment
