Research Communications Coordinator

The Research Communications Coordinator is responsible for managing communications and media relations associated with South Dakota State University’s research enterprise. This position works as the primary storyteller to effectively describe and promote the university’s research activities to local, regional and national audiences.

The position is a 12-month, benefit-eligible appointment.

The Research Communications Coordinator provides strategy, oversight, support and content for the university’s research communications initiatives through video and print articles, social media strategies, and general strategic communications and marketing campaigns. The successful candidate plays a critical role in coordinating and managing research communications initiatives that are aligned with the university’s most current strategic plan.

The Research Communications Coordinator will work closely with the Division of Research and Economic Development and the university’s various colleges, in addition to crossfunctional teams in University Marketing and Communications to conceptualize and execute multichannel research communications initiatives, ensuring the alignment of communications and messaging. The successful candidate will use the office’s digital and multimedia units to assist and manage digital assets and content for distribution to a range of audiences and increase the university’s visibility and brand awareness.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Candidate needs to be able to:

  • Develop a cohesive communications and marketing strategy that aligns with university objectives. The strategy needs to establish the university’s position as a premier research institution and identify target audiences through the appropriate channels and segments.
  • Increase South Dakota’s awareness of cutting-edge research and faculty expertise through targeted campaigns.
  • Present ideas and final deliverables, strategies and budgets to internal and external teams.
  • Develop and implement methods in which to track success of campaigns.
  • Ability to shift quickly between big-picture and long-term strategic projects and smaller, quick-turn assignments.
  • Tell stories by producing unique content and video/photo footage across all platforms including digital or broadcast channels, website and social media.
  • Edit video footage, conduct interviews and create graphics to produce elements for all broadcast channels as well as archive video footage.
  • Evaluate and recommend strategies based on new and evolving technologies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

-  Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, communications, English, marketing, business, or related field completed by start date.

-  Minimum of three (3) years of relevant strategic/broadcast communications experience in a fast-paced professional environment.

-  Exceptional communication and organizational skills. Attention to detail and accuracy for work.

-  Ability to present the results of research, type, content and form of articles required for publication by television stations, magazines, trade journals and newspapers.

-  Must be able to handle multiple tasks under tight deadlines and within established budgets.

-  Confidence to take a project from concept through final application and execution.
 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

-  Master’s degree.

Experience interacting with students/interns.

Experience in web content development and management.

Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (including Photoshop) or other image-editing and desktop publishing software.

Experience with marketing automation and CRM tools.

Experience in covering research-related topics.
