Research Integrity and Compliance Officer

South Dakota State University (SDSU) Division of Research and Economic Development seeks an effective leader of SDSU’s research integrity and compliance services. The Research Integrity and Compliance Officer will promote research excellence through research integrity and compliance as the university pursues a multi-faceted research growth agenda. We are looking for a hands-on leader who is committed to SDSU’s core values. This is a 12 month, full-time, benefit eligible position. This position reports to the Vice President for Research and Economic Development as a member of a dynamic leadership team. 

The university is in a multi-faceted transition to grow our impact through research, scholarship, and creative activity. Recent build out of facilities to support research exceeds $200 million. The Research Integrity and Compliance Officer is a core partner in SDSU’s research growth.

The Research Integrity and Compliance Officer will provide vision and leadership for implementing and continuously improving SDSU’s research integrity and regulatory compliance. This position will partner with and support multiple university sectors and stakeholders including employees, students, and university leadership to enable successful research. The Research Integrity and Compliance Officer’s work will provide for accountability that the university’s research complies with federal and state laws and regulations and other relevant policies, meets reporting regulations and good practices, and that university leadership has timely information on issues of regulatory compliance and responsible conduct of research. This position will have a commitment to SDSU core values.

Major responsibilities:

Hands-on leadership, and facilitation of regulatory compliance and good practice in multiple areas:

  • research involving human subjects;
  • research and other programming involving animal subjects;
  • responsible conduct of research and research integrity;
  • export control and foreign influence; and
  • other areas including but not limited to conflict of interest and conflict of commitment, unmanned aircraft systems, biosafety and recombinant DNA, and dual use research of concern.


  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in a related field of study completed by date of application;
  • Interpersonal, adaptability, collaborative, and leadership skills in a complex and decentralized organizational structure;
  • At least three years of experience developing and leading compliance in one or more of this position’s areas of responsibility;
  • Experience delivering verbal and written products that synthesize fact- and data-based technical and complex regulatory and compliance concepts into accessible and implementable forms; and
  • Valid driver’s license or ability obtain within 30 days of hire.


  • An advanced degree (MS, JD, PhD, or equivalent) in a related field completed by date of application;
  • Five or more years’ experience leading program development and implementation in several or all areas of responsibility;
  • Demonstrated leadership of high performing teams;
  • Demonstrated leadership in building partnerships across organizational sectors, leadership levels and stakeholder groups;
  • Experience conducting self-assessments of compliance controls.


$72,000 - $105,000
