MU TITLE: Director Program/Project Operations

LOCATION: Statewide Coverage - Columbia, MO

MU Extension Business Development program is an important component of the state’s economic development strategy and the University of Missouri’s economic development mission through providing education and assistance to businesses throughout Missouri. This position is responsible for providing operational and program support to the 14 SBDC (Small Business Development Center) contract centers located on most of the Missouri public university campuses and any satellite and partner offices. Program support ensures SBDC offices are effectively delivering education programs to small businesses that results in economic impact expected by funders of the program. Operational support ensures compliance, productivity, financial accountability, and conformity with regulations and policies including federal, state, and local stakeholders and financial partners.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Program Support

Responsible for SBDC long-term special projects, development of program curricula and implementation of products and services.

  • Understand customer trends, competitive services and national issues that could potentially impact small business and organizational success.
  • Oversees the deployment, analysis and assessment of existing and new services to ensure stakeholders’ and clients’ needs are identified and met.
  • Provides collaborative leadership with planning and evaluation of training programs and services, ensuring the assessment and validation of client growth.
  • Leads teams in market research efforts, including client outreach, data collection, survey development or focus group coordination. Assist in identifying potential new markets, products and services.
  • Stakeholder Relations – Understand the diverse stakeholder needs including federal, state, and local entities; University partners; and industry partners to ensure MO SBDC is a state and national leader in entrepreneurial development resulting in economic outcomes.
  • Marketing and public relations - Work with marketing and communications staff to develop marketing materials and product information to support effective field operations.

Operational Support

  • Revenue generation and sustainability – Work collaboratively with campus and field faculty and staff to increase revenue generation through diversification of funding, finding new funding sources, developing program income opportunities and establishing partnerships that lead to resource development.
  • Assist field offices with the development of regional operating plans, to include identification of funding sources and deployment of revenue-generating services.
  • Support the development of grant applications and assist in efforts to acquire other funding aligned with organizational strategies to drive entrepreneurial and business education.

Financial Management

  • Assist the SBDC State Director with managing the program’s financial resources, providing accountability to the operation, and developing new resources.
  • Identify, secure, and manage revenue streams to enhance the core mission of SBDC.
  • Assist with the planning of resources allocation to ensure continued growth and success of the program, and overall priority programming and statewide initiatives.

Administrative and organizational leadership

  • Human resources leadership – Contribute to a collaborative environment where people operate in a network of statewide programs that foster diversity, collegiality, professionalism and results.
  • Assist with identifying goals and expectations, analyze outcomes, and determine course of action based on results. Communicate performance expectations and outcomes of academic and staff
  • Manage an effective mentoring system of new employees.
  • Ensure professional development opportunities are available to continually strengthen competencies necessary to advance the organization.
  • Actively participate in professional development and leadership opportunities to continuously improve skills and increase research-based knowledge.
  • Participate in appropriate committees of America’s Small Business Development Centers to learn from other SBDC programs nationally and contribute to the continuous development of the national program.
  • Demonstrate mastery of core competencies, including subject matter expertise, effective and innovative teaching strategies, and program development processes. Must be able to integrate new and emerging technology, listen effectively, and speak and write effectively. Must demonstrate organizational skills and collaborative leadership abilities.
  • Ability to travel statewide and occasionally out of state; evening and weekend work necessary to accomplish organizational goals

  • As with all positions, involvement with other duties and responsibilities may be expected in order to support the mission and purpose of MU Extension, Missouri SBDC and key stakeholders.

The SBDC Associate State Director Marketing & Communications Manager is accountable to the SBDC State Director.

Salary

Salary Range: $53,600-$77,000

Shift

M-F 8am-5pm; with some evening and weekend hours to accomplish organizational goals

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 5 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.
