The Small Farm Program Assistant Community Education Specialist 3 (CES 3) will work under the direction of the Small Farms and Specialty Crops Advisor in Santa Clara, San Benito and Santa Cruz Counties to facilitate adoption of FDA Food Safety Modernization Act practices and Climate Smart Agricultural Practices on small-scale, limited resource farms. The CES 3 will assist farmers with implementation of food safety practices such as management of inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides, worker health and hygiene, storage and handling of produce, packaging materials, animal intrusion, and other on-farm food safety compliance practices. The compost and climate smart practices such as cover crop management, planting of hedgerows and windbreaks, improved irrigation and fertilizer management, and improved energy efficiency. Coordination of technical assistance will include education, outreach, application assistance, and project management for farmers receiving funding from the Climate Smart Agriculture incentive programs administered by the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) Office of Environmental Farming and Innovation (OEFI).

The CES 3 will assist with project and grant management including budget management, project record-keeping and evaluation, and required reporting. The Small Farms and Specialty Crops extension program in Santa Clara serves a diverse clientele of small-scale farmers. The CES 3 will work with the Small Farms and Specialty Crops Advisor and bilingual program staff to develop and coordinate educational events and materials related to various topics with relevance to farmers whose primary language is Spanish languages. The CES 3 will also communicate with partner organizations serving a similar grower clientele and participate in discussions of policies related to diversified small-scale farms, Climate Smart Agriculture practices, and state-funded programs.

The incumbent will also design, conduct, manage, and evaluate bilingual agricultural educational outreach and program evaluation, and assistance with record-keeping to non-English speaking small-scale farmers in partnership with educational institutions, county-based agencies, organizations and services. This position requires the applicant to be fluent in English and Spanish. Functions as a community resource, provides leadership to volunteers and acts as subject matter expert for assigned program.

The Small Farms Assistant will provide technical information and translation as needed to non-English speaking farmers. This includes conducting extension workshops and follow-up farm site visits aimed at helping the farming communities assess what agricultural assistance programs they could qualify for. Other activities include assisting non-English speaking farmers with the development and maintenance of record-keeping systems, assisting with data collection, and assisting in the production of informational videos on topics such as food safety, pesticide safety, drip irrigation, and integrated pest management. Duties include data collection and management, maintains education curricula inventory, evaluates program results, and working with small-scale farmers to assist them with paperwork and records required forregulatory compliance and applications to grant and rebate programs. This includes becoming familiar with FDA Food Safety Modernization Act, agricultural grants, loans, rebates, and other agricultural programs (USDA, PG&E, etc.) that could benefit small farmers in Santa Clara, San Benito, and Santa Cruz Counties.

This position is a contract appointment that is 100% fixed, ending on 12/31/21.
