The South Dakota State University Department of Biology and Microbiology seeks a visionary faculty in Anatomy to lead and collaboratively enhance the university’s teaching, outreach, and research productivity using new technologies. This is a 12-month, benefit-eligible, 100% time, tenure-track position at the assistant, associate or full professor level with potential for tenure upon hire. The successful candidate will teach at least one anatomy or biology course and establish and lead a strong collaborative research program focused on biology education and innovation in virtual and augmented reality. This position is supervised by the Department Head of Biology and Microbiology,

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Provide research, teaching, and team leadership to grow the Anatomy academic programs.
• Lead innovative initiatives implementing and researching VR/AR and other emerging technology’s efficacy in Anatomy education.
• Support outreach to the healthcare and K-12 sectors in the state and region.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• PhD in Anatomy or a closely related discipline by start date.
• Demonstrated success in teaching undergraduate and graduate anatomy courses including dissection of cadavers.
• Scholarly history of innovation by leveraging innovative pedagogy and technology to increase student engagement and learning in anatomy and STEM fields.
• Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences.
• Demonstrated use of technology in managing and/or delivering educational and research programs.
• Sponsorship is not available for this position, must be authorized to work in the United States.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Evidence of scholarly, professional or creative achievement in anatomy educational programs.
• Leadership of the undergraduate, graduate, and teaching laboratories in Anatomy.
• Demonstrated success in leading multi-disciplinary collaboration.
• Demonstrated ability or potential to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate educational materials and lead effective curriculum to meet various program needs.
• Ability to develop productive and lasting relationships between the university and public- and private-sector entities.

The Biology and Microbiology Department at South Dakota State University offers Undergraduate (BS) and Graduate (MS and PhD) degrees in Biological Science. The Department enrolls ~600 undergraduate students in Biology, Human Biology, Biotechnology and Microbiology majors and over 50 graduate students. Twenty-five faculty members teach a broad array of courses and conduct research in a wide range of fields.

As the state’s 1862 Morrill Act land-grant institution, the work of South Dakota State University is carried out on its main resident campus in Brookings, at sites in Sioux Falls, Pierre, Rapid City, and Aberdeen, and through Extension offices and Agricultural Experiment Station research sites across South Dakota.
