Department Head and Associate or Full Professor

The South Dakota State University Department of Biology and Microbiology is offering an exciting career opportunity as Department Head. This is a 12-month, full-time, tenure-track, benefits-earning administrative appointment that carries an academic rank of Associate Professor or Professor. This leadership position serves as the executive officer of the department and reports directly to the Dean of the College of Natural Sciences.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Department of Biology and Microbiology seeks an innovative individual with vision and strong leadership skills who is committed to establishing collaborative relationships, fosters an environment in which faculty and stakeholders are engaged partners, and communicates consistently and effectively. The Department Head must lead the department to develop and maintain strong, relevant research, teaching, and outreach programs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ph.D. degree in relevant discipline.
  • Evidence of effective leadership and administrative skills including management of budget and personnel.
  • Effective interpersonal relations, professionalism, and motivational skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Meets the standards for tenure and rank in the department. Standards documents are available upon request to the search committee chair.
  • Understanding of the land-grant mission.
  •  Must be authorized to work in the United States. Sponsorship is not available for this position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in academic administration, e.g., demonstrated experience overseeing complex budgets, fiscal matters, strategic planning and personnel management.
  • Understanding and appreciation of evidence-based approaches to teaching and learning.
  • Familiarity with ASM curriculum guidelines, NABT standards, and/or Vision and Change in Undergraduate Biology Education.
  • Familiarity with NSTA and/or CAEP accreditation.
  • Familiarity with student success best practices.
  • Familiarity with recruitment and retention best practices for students, faculty, and staff.
  •  Experience with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Evidence of effective collaboration across disciplines and/or with multiple stakeholders.
  •  Evidence of leadership professional development.
  •  Evidence of cultivating entrepreneurial opportunities.
  • Commitment and demonstrated success towards an inclusive climate that stimulates excellence.
