South Dakota State University’s Department of Allied and Population Health is offering an exciting career opportunity for an experienced respiratory therapist and educator in the faculty rank of Instructor. The successful applicant will join a rapidly growing, innovative and inter-disciplinary department. The Allied and Population Health Department houses faculty from public health, medical laboratory sciences, pharmacy, and respiratory care. Inter-disciplinary collaboration is fostered and encouraged among faculty and students. This is a 12-month, full-time, benefit-eligible position. SDSU seeks to attract an active, professional and academically diversified faculty of the highest caliber who is skilled in the scholarship of teaching, practice, application, and integration of knowledge.
The Respiratory Care Instructor is responsible for laboratory and clinical area instruction. The Instructor will adhere to the policies of the clinical affiliate and the university. Their primary area of work will be at one of the hospitals in the State of South Dakota, but their work may extend to other hospitals or health systems, as needed. South Dakota has three health systems at which our faculty and students in the respiratory care program are placed including: Sanford USD Medical Center and the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, and Monument Health in Rapid City.

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION AND CULUTRAL EXPECTATIONS:
The Allied and Population Health Department, within the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions is an interdisciplinary department consisting of practitioners and researchers working to improve the human condition. In addition to the two respiratory care programs (A.S. and B.S.) the department offers seven other academic programs, from disciplines such as public health, pharmacy, medical laboratory sciences, and respiratory care. The Allied and Population Health Department houses faculty from public health, medical laboratory sciences, pharmacy, and respiratory care. Inter-disciplinary collaboration is fostered and encouraged among faculty and students. Faculty work with collaborating institutions across the state and nation. Students in these programs complete clinical experiences with our collaborative partners and affiliate sites across America. In addition to teaching, the department houses the new Community Practice Innovations Center (CPIC) which focuses on community-based research with an emphasis on access to care, population health, and improving health outcomes. The South Dakota State University’s Respiratory Program is the only CoARC accredited Respiratory Program in South Dakota (SD). The program has strong partnerships with the major healthcare systems in SD. Classrooms, faculty offices, and clinical sites are held at Monument, Sanford, and Avera Health systems. We have graduated several students since the inception of the program in the 1980’s, and are proud to report that our alumni make up a majority of the workforce across SD. We have consistently recorded 100% job placement for graduates and offer a very dynamic working environment for faculty.
As the state’s 1862 Morrill Act land-grant institution, the work of South Dakota State University is carried out on its main resident campus in Brookings, at sites in Sioux Falls, Pierre, Rapid City, and Aberdeen, and through Extension offices and Agricultural Experiment Station research sites across South Dakota.
