Instructor of Agribusiness/Agricultural Economics

The Ness School of Management and Economics at South Dakota State University (SDSU) invites applications for an Instructor of Agribusiness/Agricultural Economics to assist with our undergraduate program. The successful candidate will have an average workload of eight courses or course sections each academic year and assist with student advising and recruiting.

The Ness School seeks a dynamic, innovative instructor to teach courses supporting the Agricultural Business and Agricultural Economics curricula. Specific teaching responsibilities associated with this position may depend on the strengths and interests of the successful candidate and the needs of the School, and may include undergraduate courses such as agribusiness sales, agricultural business management, agricultural marketing & prices, farm & ranch management, global food systems, and introduction to cooperatives. This individual may also assist with advising student clubs in the School.

The Ness School includes approximately 30 full-time faculty members, a team of academic advisors, and roughly 800 students who major in agricultural business, agricultural economics, business economics, economics, and entrepreneurial studies. The School also offers twelve minors, including agricultural business, commodity risk management, agribusiness marketing, and land valuation & rural real estate.

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, renewable, non-tenure track, nine-month appointment, with the possibility of supplemental summer teaching. Continuing appointments will be based on performance. The incumbent reports to the Director of the Ness School of Management and Economics. Start date is August 2023.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Typical teaching workload will consist of four undergraduate courses or sections each semester. Course format may include conventional face-to-face, remote delivery, and/or hybrid delivery.
  • Participate in School and University governance service activities.
  • Mentor undergraduate students and, possibly, advise undergraduate-student organizations in the School.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in Agricultural/Applied Economics, Agribusiness, or closely related field; or an MBA by the hiring date.
  • Present strong evidence of the potential for effective teaching.
  • Effective written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with the North American agriculture/food sector.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Teaching experience at the collegiate level.
  • Experience in fields of applied economics, such as agricultural marketing, agribusiness management, or production.
  • Experience teaching distance, hybrid-mode, or online courses.

THE NESS SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT AND ECONOMICS:

The Ness School, in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, includes approximately 30 full-time faculty members and a team of undergraduate academic advisors. The school embodies an intellectual philosophy that economics and quantitative analysis are foundational to thriving in and critically assessing a modern global economy. Students who major in agricultural business, business economics, or entrepreneurial studies complete a comprehensive suite of business courses, including those in our management and economics core.

The Ness School of Management and Economics offers students a high-quality education and excellent job-placement opportunities. Graduates hold leadership and management positions across the northern Great Plains, Midwest, and nationally in banking and finance, processing and manufacturing management, energy and bioenergy, and food and agribusiness management, and in policy, oversight and regulation; and many are leaders in the broader innovation and entrepreneurship community.

The Ness School is in the process of securing AACSB accreditation, managing significant enrollment growth in its majors, and balancing new opportunities in core business fields—including enterprise management and innovation—with its traditional strengths in economics, agribusiness, and quantitative analysis. The School embraces interdisciplinary and interprofessional collaboration in research, teaching, community engagement, and extension work. The School enrolls approximately 800 undergraduate majors, including more than 500 students who major in business economics and more than 200 students who major in agricultural business, a degree conferred by the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences.

Additionally, the school offers a master’s degree in economics that includes two program options: an economic-theory option that requires courses in advanced microeconomics, advanced macroeconomics, econometrics, and research methods, emphasizing applied economic research in the form of graduate thesis; and a business-economics option that requires courses in managerial economics, advanced business decision science, financial management, marketing strategy and analytics, and a capstone experience that blends corporate finance, entrepreneurship, and marketing analytics and potentially collaborates with industry.

The Ness School operates within a rich and supportive corporate-enterprise ecosystem. For example, Brookings is home to Daktronics, 3M, and Larson Manufacturing. Sioux Falls, a 45-minute drive south of Brookings, is home to several thriving corporate enterprises with which SDSU enjoys productive relationships. Additionally, Innovation Partners and the Enterprise Institute located at the SDSU Research Park Innovation Center in Brookings provide opportunities for networking with regional innovators and entrepreneurs, as well as opportunities for part-time employment and incubator space for students.
