JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:  The Ohio State University Extension (OSUE) seeks an Educator to work collaboratively with county, center, region, and state teams of OSUE professionals and with local agency leaders and volunteers. The Extension Educator, Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) in Coshocton County, will be responsible for a broad range of basic to complex duties that could include but are not limited to: providing guidance and/or leadership to developing and conducting a proactive applied research and education program in agriculture and natural resources to meet current and future needs in forage and pasture management, agronomic crop production, livestock production, farm management, natural resources, farmland use issues, innovative agricultural business opportunities, environmental stewardship, agricultural awareness, residential and commercial horticulture, and small farm management. The Educator will plan, teach, deliver, disseminate, and evaluate educational programs and applied research on relevant local issues; give leadership to the development of pro-active educational programs using innovative educational methods; maintain a high level of visibility and facilitate communications with a wide range of clientele to promote the understanding of agriculture and natural resource issues; maintain a program of individual professional improvement in selected subject areas; ensure diversity among potential clientele and learners, and equal access to programs and facilities; work closely with local advisory committees, commodity groups, and volunteers (including Master Gardeners) to conduct needs assessment and priority setting to determine emphasis of educational programs; serve as an educational advisor and liaison for OSU Extension and the University to appropriate public issue and program related organizations; represent OSU Extension and the University with federal, state and local agencies, and with educational institutions at the local community level; and identify, recruit, and develop the volunteer leadership necessary to carry out relevant parts of their programming.

50% – Plan, teach, deliver, disseminate, and evaluate educational programs and applied research on relevant local issues such as forage crops, pasture management, beef and small ruminant production, agronomic crops, farm management, natural resources, land use, nutrient management, integrated pest management, water quality, residential and commercial horticulture, rural economic development, and agricultural profitability.  Provide educational programs to allow producers to maintain their pesticide, fertilizer, and beef quality assurance re-certifications. Give direction and/or leadership to the development of pro-active educational programs using innovative educational methods. Maintain a high level of visibility and facilitate communications with a wide range of clientele including traditional and non-traditional learners, elected officials, agricultural and non-agricultural stakeholders, and environmental and special interest groups to promote the understanding of agriculture and natural resource issues. Maintain a program of individual professional improvement in selected subject areas. Ensure diversity among potential clientele and learners, and equal access to programs and facilities without regard to age, race, creed, color, handicap, sex, sexual orientation, developmental disability, national origin, marital status, arrest, or non-program related conviction record.

25% – Provide a minimum of 25% statewide specialization, in a topical area to be determined through consultation with Extension leadership. This specialization should align with the professional strengths of the Educator and helps to meet an identified local need. Approximately 10% of Educator’s time will be dedicated to statewide issues (required). Maintain a high level of visibility and facilitate communications with a wide range of clientele including traditional and non-traditional learners, elected officials, agricultural and non-agricultural stakeholders, and environmental and special interest groups to promote the understanding of agriculture and natural resource issues. Work collaboratively with Extension Educators in all other program areas (4-H Youth Development, Community Development, and Family and Consumer Sciences), where interdisciplinary efforts are needed to meet broad issues or carry out major programming efforts.

15% – Develop effective advisory committees. Work closely with local advisory committees, commodity groups, and volunteers to conduct needs assessment and priority setting to determine emphasis of educational programs. Serve as an educational advisor and liaison for OSU Extension and the University to appropriate public issue and program-related organizations. Represent OSU Extension and the University with federal, state and local agencies, and with educational institutions at the local level.

10% – Be an effective office team player. Be responsible for assuming a portion of the shared stewardship responsibilities for local office management. Complete impact reports for local, OSU Extension, and United States Department of Agriculture leaders and stakeholders as appropriate and as requested. Identify and develop funding proposals to support new and /or enhanced programming. Provide effective fiscal oversight for grants and other agricultural programming funding.

Required Experience:An earned Bachelor’s or Master’s degree at the time of hire is required. Preference will be given to candidates with a degree in the field of agriculture, agronomy, animal sciences, agricultural economics, and natural resources, or other educationally related area.

The successful candidate will have a strong written and oral communication skills and experience working with diverse clientele and organizations. Demonstrated success in working as part of a team and initiating collaborative partnerships is sought. Leadership ability and strong teaching and subject matter expertise in at least one area of agriculture is necessary with the ability to establish or support agribusiness opportunities. Candidates must be willing to work flexible hours with a minimum of supervision.
