JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Ohio State University Extension (OSUE) seeks an Educator to work collaboratively with county, area, and state teams of OSUE professionals and with local agency leaders and volunteers.  The Extension Educator, Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) in Holmes County, will be responsible for a broad range of basic to complex duties that could include but are not limited to: providing guidance and/or leadership to developing and conducting a proactive applied research and education program in agriculture and natural resources to meet current and future needs in the following areas: small farm management; forage and pasture management including weed/insect and disease management;  agronomic crop production including forage/hay/pasture production, tree fruits, small fruit/brambles, and vegetable gardens; livestock production, specifically small scale, poultry, sheep/goats, beef, dairy and equine;  consumer and commercial horticulture, including tree fruits, small fruit/brambles, and vegetable gardens; natural resources including woodlands, wildlife, and ponds; agricultural awareness; farmland use issues; food security; innovative agricultural business opportunities; farm management and tax issues; environmental quality and sustainability; renewable energy; and bio-based products.

The ANR Educator will work closely with local advisory committees, commodity groups and volunteers to conduct needs assessment to identify educational needs and opportunities of local community and determine priority emphasis of educational programs.  Design, implement and teach educational programming, based on these needs, to groups and individuals comprised of adults and/or youth.    May also convene and facilitate community coalitions focused on those needs. The Educator will identify, recruit and develop the volunteer leadership necessary to carry out relevant parts of their programming.

The Educator will give leadership to the development of pro-active educational programs using innovative educational methods.  Maintain a high level of visibility and facilitate communications with a wide range of clientele to promote the understanding of agriculture and natural resource issues.  Maintain a program of individual professional improvement in selected subject areas; ensure a diversity among existing and potential clientele (i.e. Amish/Anabaptist, women, minorities) and learners and equal access to programs and facilities.  May be required to replicate and adhere to existing programs that meet the needs of their local community.  Develop promotional material, work with and/or lead committees and volunteers, and establish and maintain partnerships within the community that support the achievement of the program goals.  Evaluate educational programs and dissemination methods, as well as utilizes existing evaluation instruments to evaluate the teaching effectiveness, program quality and results of local programs.

The Educator will participate in discussions with county representatives concerning program funding.  May also be responsible for securing external funds to support local programming.   Participate as a member of county, multi-county, and/or state Extension teams to further the overall mission, vision and values of both Ohio State University Extension and Agriculture and Natural Resources.

This position is located in Holmes County, Ohio.

50% – Plan, teach, deliver, disseminate, and evaluate educational programs and applied research on relevant local issues that could include but are not limited to: providing guidance and/or leadership to developing and conducting a proactive applied research and education program in agriculture and natural resources to meet current and future needs in the following areas: small farm management; forage and pasture management including weed/insect and disease management; agronomic crop production including forage/hay/pasture production, tree fruits, small fruit/brambles, and vegetable gardens; livestock production, specifically small scale, poultry, sheep/goats, beef, dairy and equine; consumer and commercial horticulture, including tree fruits, small fruit/brambles, and vegetable gardens; natural resources including woodlands, wildlife, and ponds; agricultural awareness; farmland use issues; food security; innovative agricultural business opportunities; farm management and tax issues; environmental quality and sustainability; renewable energy; and bio-based products. Provide educational programs to allow producers to maintain their pesticide, fertilizer, youth quality assurance programs, and beef quality assurance re-certifications. Give direction and/or leadership to the development of pro-active educational programs using innovative educational methods. Maintain a high level of visibility and facilitate communications with a wide range of clientele including traditional and non-traditional learners, elected officials, agricultural and non-agricultural stakeholders, and environmental and special interest groups to promote the understanding of agriculture and natural resource issues. Maintain a program of individual professional improvement in selected subject areas. Ensure diversity among potential clientele and learners, and equal access to programs and facilities without regard to age, race, creed, color, handicap, sex, sexual orientation, developmental disability, national origin, marital status, arrest, or non-program related conviction record.

25% – Provide a minimum of 25% statewide specialization, in a topical area to be determined through consultation with Extension leadership. This specialization should align with the professional strengths of the Educator and helps to meet an identified local need. Approximately 10% of Educator’s time will be dedicated to statewide issues (required). Maintain a high level of visibility and facilitate communications with a wide range of clientele including traditional and non-traditional learners, elected officials, agricultural and non-agricultural stakeholders, and environmental and special interest groups to promote the understanding of agriculture and natural resource issues. Work collaboratively with Extension Educators in all other program areas (4-H Youth Development, Community Development, and Family and Consumer Sciences), where interdisciplinary efforts are needed to meet broad issues or carry out major programming efforts.

15% – Develop effective advisory committees. Work closely with local advisory committees, commodity groups, and volunteers to conduct needs assessment and priority setting to determine emphasis of educational programs. Serve as an educational advisor and liaison for OSU Extension and the University to appropriate public issue and program-related organizations. Represent OSU Extension and the University with federal, state, and local agencies, and with educational institutions at the local level. Identify, recruit, and develop the volunteer leadership necessary to carry out relevant parts of their programming.

10% – Be an effective office team player. Be responsible for assuming a portion of the shared stewardship responsibilities for local office management. Complete impact reports for local, OSU Extension, and United States Department of Agriculture leaders and stakeholders as appropriate and as requested. Identify and develop funding proposals to support new and /or enhanced programming. Provide effective fiscal oversight for grants and other agricultural programming funding.

Required Experience:
An earned Bachelor’s or Master’s degree at the time of hire is required. Preference will be given to candidates with a degree in the field of agriculture, agronomy, animal sciences, agricultural economics, and natural resources, or other educationally-related area.

Successful candidate will have strong written and oral communication skills and experience working with diverse clientele and organizations. Demonstrated success in working as part of a team and initiating collaborative partnerships is sought. Leadership ability and strong teaching and subject matter expertise in at least one area of agriculture is necessary with the ability to establish or support agribusiness opportunities. Candidates must be willing to work flexible hours with a minimum of supervision.

Entry level knowledge and/or the ability to learn concepts, processes, ideas, and methods of specific program area.  Experience effectively assessing, replicating, and teaching research-based educational programs to diverse audiences.  Experience in building and maintaining relationships with various groups of individuals, including peers, support staff, volunteers, and local committees, in an effort to achieve common programming goals..
