Executive Summary

The Ohio State University invites nominations and applications for the position of Vice Provost for Global Strategies and International Affairs.

The University seeks an innovative, purposeful, and entrepreneurial individual to lead Ohio State in continuing to develop and implement an evolving global strategy in collaboration with students, faculty, and staff.  The Vice Provost will lead the Office of International Affairs which is comprised of Area Study Centers; Global Education; Global Gateways; Global One Health Initiative; International Partnerships; International Scholars; and International Students.  As Ohio State seeks to grow its excellence in teaching, research and creative expression, and community engagement, the Vice Provost is positioned to develop strategies to enhance international opportunities for faculty, staff, and students; strengthen access to educational resources; and forge external partnerships within Columbus and beyond.

The Vice Provost for Global Strategies and International Affairs reports to the Senior Vice Provost for External Engagement and is regularly engaged with the Executive Vice President and Provost.  The Vice Provost serves as a member of the External Engagement leadership team as well and is expected to be fully engaged with leaders and teams leading all aspects of the student, faculty, staff, and community experience.

Key Responsibilities 

Building upon a very strong foundation established over the past 15 years, the next Vice Provost for Global Strategies and International Affairs will:

  • Provide vision and leadership for Ohio State’s comprehensive international strategy, including advancing the University’s strategic international agenda through strengthening or developing initiatives and strategic partnerships.
  • Serve as a key resource to university leaders and leadership bodies on matters and opportunities related to advancing the international agenda.
  • Collaborate with leaders to secure external and internal funding to support international activities and programs.
  • Develop and/or support strategies to evaluate and strengthen international partnerships and internal model to align with current and emerging university and college priorities.
  • Serve as a representative of the university in internationally focused networks, alliances, and leadership groups.
  • Create opportunities for global research, scholarship, and creative expression.
  • Raise the profile of faculty engaged internationally and domestically with immigrant and new American communities.
  • Develop strategies to further engage students, faculty, and staff with leaders from around the globe who visit campus, central Ohio, and the state of Ohio.
  • Think creatively and collaboratively about how to support a diverse range of international students.
  • Provide access and equity in global education programs for domestic students.
  • Create opportunities for students to learn about and engage globally on and off campuses through visiting scholars, international partnerships, and local and global communities.
  • Facilitate initiatives to continue to assess and strengthen education abroad programs to ensure experiences are contributing to student academic success.
  • Develop and implement strategies to assess the impact of student programs, in collaboration with the Office of Student Academic Success, Student Life, Graduate School, Colleges, and Departments.
  • Collaborate to raise the profile and impact of the Area Study Centers.
  • Facilitate the development and prioritization of initiatives of the Global Gateways to ensure alignment with the Academic Plan and priorities of the university.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a clear and compelling vision for the continued development and implementation of Ohio State’s international mission and engagement strategy. The successful candidate will be an innovative and experienced leader capable of motivating diverse teams of employees with the skills and talent to develop and execute plans to enhance the overall success of international education and engagement university wide. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of accomplishment in a leadership position and possess excellent communication, collaboration, operational and resource management, and interpersonal skills. Candidates will have an earned doctorate or other terminal degree and a record of scholarly achievement sufficient to merit a tenured appointment at the rank of professor.

The successful candidate will:

  • Have an entrepreneurial spirit and compelling vision of the future of international engagement, one that will inspire institutional growth and support change;
  • Have knowledge of evolving patterns of international collaborations between universities and global partners and models of operational effectiveness;
  • Have a demonstrated understanding of issues involved in effective delivery of high-quality international instructional plans;
  • Have demonstrated an ability to develop partnerships with institutions abroad to enhance educational opportunities for students and faculty, strengthen or expand international programs, and enhance the diversity of scholars on or visiting campus;
  • Have demonstrated an ability to achieve goals through promoting collaboration and teambuilding and working collaboratively with peers, employees, faculty and with a diverse group of university constituencies;
  • Have experience engaging international alumni as strategic partners;
  • Have experience managing internal engagement and collaborations (i.e., colleges, campus partners, service and support units);
  • Have demonstrated the ability to engage and develop international or intercultural partnerships with civic, community, cultural, and industry leaders locally and globally in ways that benefit the community and university students, faculty, and alumni;
  • Possess the collaborative spirit and skills required to forge effective alliances with multicultural and international stakeholders; and
  • Possess intellectual and managerial leadership to inspire excellence in international education, research, and service across the university.
