Chief of Police

Chartered by the state of Georgia in 1785, the University of Georgia (UGA) is the birthplace of public higher education in America — launching our nation’s great tradition of world-class education for all. The university’s main campus is located in Athens, approximately 65 miles northeast of Atlanta, with extended campuses in Atlanta, Griffin, Gwinnett, and Tifton. The Position

The chief of police position reports directly to the vice president for finance & administration and will have direct managerial and supervisory responsibilities over all operational areas of the UGA police department. The chief of police will provide advice and support to the university’s extended campuses, and will work collaboratively with the associate vice president for public safety, other campus partners, and local and state law enforcement agencies to enhance public safety operations across the university and the local community. The chief of police will advise the president and other campus leaders on public safety matters and will provide reports and information as required to the University System of Georgia’s police chief and the associate vice president for public safety.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess a master’s degree in criminal justice, public or business administration, or a related field, and at least 10 years of progressively responsible management experience in law enforcement. Advanced management level training through the FBI National Academy, Southern Police Institute, Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command, or Georgia Law Enforcement Command College is required. The successful candidate must possess POST certification in the State of Georgia or attain certification as a condition of employment. Preferred qualifications include law enforcement experience in a higher education research university environment, including public safety activities surrounding major sporting and other university events, and familiarity with Federal and State laws applicable to campus public safety including, but not limited to FERPA, The Clery Act, and Title IX laws and regulations.
