Job Description:
Description of Duties:
The NYS Mesonet Field Technician is part of a team responsible for the maintenance of 126 standard and 85 non-standard (profiler, surface energy budget, snow, micronet) weather stations across New York State. The technician team is responsible for the general maintenance and functionality of the sensors and associated equipment and infrastructure housing associated with each site. Duties may include (but are not limited to) repairs to sensors and infrastructure, sensor calibration, and cutting grass. The technician may be asked to assist staff with other Mesonet projects in the office or field as needed. This job requires a significant amount of driving across New York State. The ability to work independently and with others, general technical expertise, and hands-on experience and/or training with electronics are recommended.

Duties include:

  • Routine and emergency maintenance. Troubleshoot and repair/replace failed sensors and electronic equipment. Includes travel to sites across the state as needed, some with overnight stays
  • Upgrade equipment and sensors
  • Operate power equipment to maintain site vegetation
  • Coordinate with fellow technicians on projects throughout the state
  • Complete, file and submit paperwork and digital metadata on a deadline basis
  • Document site conditions, inspection reports and instrument problems
  • Installation of new sites, sensors, and equipment

Requirements:
Minimum
Qualifications:

  • 2 years of college completed OR Associate’s Degree in Electronics, Engineering or Meteorology from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting organization AND 3 years of relevant experience OR 5 years of relevant experience
  • Experience in outdoor field work in varying and extreme weather conditions
  • Ability to travel statewide, including travel to areas that may not be served by public transportation
  • Ability to lift and carry objects 50 pounds or greater
  • Ability to climb ladders and towers up to 30 feet
  • Ability to work independently, work together as a team, and to work with minimal supervision

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with meteorological instrumentation
  • Familiarity with electronics and wiring
  • Ability to start to work within four weeks of job offer

Additional Information:
Salary Range: $40,000 – $50,000
