Job Description:
Description of Duties:
The Valm lab at The State University of New York (SUNY) at Albany seeks a highly motivated Postdoctoral researcher to join our interdisciplinary and diverse team. The Valm laboratory studies structure-function relationships in the human oral microbiome using cutting edge fluorescence imaging, genomics and spatial transcriptomics. Creative and high impact NIH-supported postdoctoral projects to study structure-function relationships in patient derived plaque samples and in vitro models are available. Potential postdoctoral projects include ongoing collaborations with clinician researchers and basic scientists both within and outside the U.S. The successful candidate will augment their molecular microbiology skillset with expertise in state-of-the-art, quantitative imaging applied to oral biofilms.

The Valm lab is highly interdisciplinary and comprises a talented group of microbiologists, cell biologists, biophysicists, bioinformaticists and mathematicians. The Valm laboratory is situated within the RNA Institute and the postdoctoral candidate will have access to state-of-the-art facilities and a rich and supportive intellectual environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct rigorous and original science
  • Independently design, perform, and interpret experiments
  • Write and publish high-quality peer-reviewed research
  • Develop skills in grant writing
  • Supervise and train undergraduate or graduate trainees

Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:

  • A PhD, MD, or DDS received within the past three years from a college or university accredited by a USDOE, or an internationally recognized accrediting organization in microbiology or cell biology.
  • A strong publication record and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ambition to reach the next career level with diverse colleagues.
  • Ability to collaborate on multidisciplinary research projects.
  • Ability to work with a culturally diverse population

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Microbial genetics including CRISPR/Cas genome editing, engineering of reporter fusions, transposon mutagenesis and allelic exchange
  • Microbial bioinformatics, especially metagenomics and metatranscriptomics
  • Bacteriology including advanced methods for microbial cell culture and isolation

Additional Information:
Salary Range: $56,000 – $60,000
