The FY 2022-23 New York State Budget allocated $75 million to UAlbany to kick-start the $200M Albany AI Initiative. Under this initiative, there will be an exascale supercomputing system at UAlbany, made available for not only the faculty and students at UAlbany and other SUNY Campuses across the State, but also for government and industrial partners, especially startups in AI. In addition, UAlbany will add an unprecedented 27 new faculty members specializing in artificial intelligence in the coming months, including a founding director for the Institute for Artificial Intelligence (IAI).

Description of Duties:

JOB SUMMARY

The Division for Research and Economic Development (DfRED) seeks a Grant Development Associate to assist UAlbany faculty and scholars in preparing strong extramural grant proposals for federal, state, and private agencies. The Grants Development Associate will keep abreast of the funding opportunities and regularly inform individuals whose research interests match the requirements of the opportunity. The individual in this position will support faculty members in developing, writing, reviewing, editing, packaging, and submitting grant proposals to funding agencies. This position reports to the Associate Vice President responsible for Faculty Research Advancement and serves as a member of the Faculty Research Advancement Team.

Essential Functions: Primary duties of this position include but are not limited to:

• Maintaining a current understanding of funding programs of various agencies, for example, NSF, NIH, DOE, DOD, NEH, NEA, NASA, EPA, NOAA, etc. Should be familiar with their missions, Broad Agency Announcements (BAAs), Request for Proposals (RFPs), Dear Colleague Letter, guidelines, and priorities.
• Researching, identifying, and distributing information about potential funding opportunities to faculty and staff to support institutional priorities.
• Initiating regular communication and raising awareness about collaborative external funding opportunities.
• Assisting faculty and staff researchers in all aspects of writing and developing grant applications to external funding agencies.
  • Interpreting and understanding the funding program requirements and guidelines.
  • Offer one-on-one consultations for faculty from all discipline.
  • Preparing a list of required proposal contents based on the program description.
  • Coordinating proposal writing activities of UAlbany scholars for small projects and complex multidisciplinary proposals.
  • Reviewing, editing, and formatting required proposal documents prepared by principal investigators, such as project narratives, summaries, budgets, letters of institutional support, biographical sketches, letters of collaboration and commitments, and other documents.
  • The activities include:
• Serving as a member of the Faculty Research Advancement team, supporting the University’s grant-seeking efforts, and helping in growing external funding.
• Helping launch and manage seed funding programs for UAlbany faculty and track the progress of seed-funded projects.
• Managing pre-submission reviews by subject matter experts of proposals prepared by UAlbany faculty.
• Help organize and actively participate in the Proposal Writing Course for UAlbany faculty, including preparing written reviews of their proposals.
• Help in organizing lightning talks, charrettes, and proposal writing workshops.

This is primarily an on-site position with the option to work remotely 2 days per week as permitted by the University Research Foundation and UAlbany’s applicable rules.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, health sciences, communications, or a related field from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting organization.
• A minimum of two years of experience in grant development, with an emphasis on proposals to federal agencies.
• Excellent editing skills, as evidenced by samples of previous work.
• Excellent written, and verbal communication, and critical thinking skills.
• Ability to work both independently and as a team member in-person and remotely, to multi-task and respond professionally in challenging situations is essential.
• Ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment and commitment to the inclusion of individuals of diverse racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds and gender identities.
• Demonstrated ability to manage group scientific writing projects.
• Familiarity with federal compliance regulations for grant-funded projects, budget outlines, bio-sketches, data management plans, and other supplemental documents is essential.
• Familiarity with online grant submissions portals, such as grants.gov and research.gov.
• Experience working with Microsoft Suite of applications (including Microsoft Office and TEAMS) and Adobe applications. Ability to prepare tables, graphics, and illustrations for grant applications.

Preferred Qualifications:

• A graduate (Masters’ or doctoral) degree in science, engineering, health sciences, communications, or a related field from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting organization.
• Extensive experience in writing/reviewing scientific articles and proposals for funding scientific research projects at an institution of higher education.
• Experience interpreting and applying policies from multiple levels of authority (federal, state, and institutional).
• Demonstrated success in securing both small and large external funding.

Additional Information:

Salary Range: $65,000- $85,000
