Position Overview

The University of California, Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) offers a unique recruitment opportunity for a UC Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Environmental Horticulture Area Advisor.  UC ANR operates a statewide network of researchers and educators dedicated to the development and application of knowledge to address local agricultural, environmental and health issues. Over 150 UC ANR UCCE advisors conduct research, outreach and education from locally based CE offices serving all 58 counties from 70+ locations throughout the state. Location Headquarters:  Placer County, Auburn, CA

Purpose. The Environmental Horticulture Area Advisor will develop and extend research and education through a variety of activities that would complement the programmatic contributions of other area advisors.

The advisor will be responsible for implementing an innovative and applied problem-solving research program to mitigate climate change impacts on plant and human health.  The applied research program will identify drought-, heat-, and fire-resistant landscape management practices (including urban trees), and integrated pest management programs that promote the health and longevity of urban landscapes to maximize ecosystem services (canopy cover, carbon sequestration, climate impact mitigation, etc.).

The Environmental Horticulture Area Advisor will develop and extend research-based information using a range of communication options to meet the needs of a diverse audiences.  The advisor will disseminate the information through direct education at seminars, workshops, and field days; online and through social media; as well as through partnerships and collaborations with agencies and organizations.  The advisor will provide administrative and academic oversight for growing UC Master Gardener Programs in the two counties.

This is an exciting opportunity to develop and deliver relevant program content to have meaningful impacts n local communities and throughout California.  There are opportunities for extension and research partnerships with a variety of stakeholders and partnerships, including county and city parks, city planners, county and city foresters, urban health non-profit networks, Resource Conservation Districts, NGOs, Fire Safe Councils, and the UCCE Master Gardener Programs.  The advisor joins a team of highly motivated UCCE colleagues who are passionate about their work and are dedicated to making a difference within the communities and throughout California.  The potential for collaborative projects within the UC ANR system is nearly limitless.

As an academic with a UC Master Gardener Program  appointment, you will have the opportunity to support the program, working alongside a team of dedicated volunteers, staff, and fellow academics.  Administratively, you will supervise a staff coordinator who manages day to day volunteer engagement and program activities. Your academic support includes aligning program activities with local horticulture needs, providing training, and reviewing UC Master Gardener volunteer outputs for academic accuracy.

Counties of Responsibility.  This position will be headquartered in the UCCE Placer Office serving Placer and Nevada counties.

Reporting Relationship: The CE Advisor serves under the administrative guidance of the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) County Director for the UCCE Placer/Nevada counties and with input from the Master Gardener Statewide Director.

Qualifications and Skills Required

Required Qualifications

Education: A minimum of a Master’s degree in environmental horticulture, urban forestry, arboriculture, or a related field is required at the time of appointment.

Additional Requirements

• Ability and means to travel on a flexible schedule as needed, proof of liability and property damage insurance on vehicle used is required. Must possess valid California Driver’s License to drive a County or University vehicle.
• The ability to work with clientele across a wide range of socio-economic classes and ethnicities is essential.
• The CE Advisor must possess or obtain within one year a Qualified Pesticide Applicator Certificate (QAC) or License (QAL) prior to applying or supervising the application of any pesticide.
• This is not a remote position. The candidate must be available to work onsite.

Demonstrated excellence in written, oral, interpersonal, and information technology communication skills.  Public speaking and delivering seminars and workshops to stakeholders is a routine part of this position.  Spanish language skills are a plus.

Demonstrated ability to share complex information in a manner tailored to the audience.

• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a team member with UC colleagues, industry, and other stakeholders.

Salary & Benefits

Salary: The salary range for this Cooperative Extension Advisor position is Assistant Rank, Step I ($71,200) to Step VI ($94,000).  Step placement in the advisor series is based on applicable experience and professional qualifications.  For information regarding Cooperative Extension Advisor salary scales, please refer to the University of California website: https://ucanr.edu/sites/anrstaff/files/358478.pdf.   If the successful candidate is currently a UCCE Advisor, the candidate will be offered the position without change to the candidate’s current rank, step, salary and/or appointment terms; and if applicable, is eligible to retain indefinite status.
