The College of Engineering is undergoing an exciting period of significant growth as part of the Big Ten Academic Alliance. The college has hired more than 69 new faculty in the last five years and plans to expand the number of faculty in the coming years. The college boasts over 230 faculty, serving programs on City Campus and East Campus in Lincoln and Scott Campus in Omaha. Successful candidates are anticipated to help shape the future of this organization as it becomes established among the elite engineering programs in the country. The College of Engineering is particularly focused on several areas of major interdisciplinary initiatives, including Advanced Materials and Manufacturing; Biomedical Engineering and Health Care Environments; Energy Materials and Energy Systems; Engineering in Agriculture, Life Sciences, and Natural Resources; National Defense and Security; Transportation and the Built Environment; and Discipline Based Engineering Education.

The college is in the midst of a $190 million multi-phase buildings project to develop world-class teaching and research facilities. The new Engineering Research Center and the continuing renovation of Scott Engineering Center research and teaching labs. The 182,080 square foot, $115 million Kiewit Hall will open in January 2024 following a $25 million gift from Kiewit Corp., based on Omaha, Nebraska. This building is dedicated to engineering education and includes student design and collaborative spaces, the City Campus Construction Management program, state-of-the-art classrooms and teaching labs, student support and college administration offices.

Numerous opportunities for collaborations across the University of Nebraska exist, including with the University of Nebraska Medical Center; the Nebraska Center for Energy Sciences Research; the Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience; the Center for Nanohybrid Functional Materials; the Center for Electro-Optics and Functionalized Surfaces; the Nebraska Transportation Center and Midwest Roadside Safety Facility; Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior; the Nebraska Athletic Performance Laboratory; Nebraska Innovation Campus; and other state- and federally funded research centers and programs. World-class computational capabilities are available in the Holland Computing Center, which manages supercomputing facilities as well as other resources available to University of Nebraska researchers.
