Manuscripts Librarian

The primary responsibilities of this position are to provide reference service and instruction for all manuscript collections; oversee a comprehensive program of appraisal, acquisition, intellectual control, and preservation of digital and analog manuscript collections; process collections; create and edit finding aids and other digital surrogates using generally accepted archival standards and best practices.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manages all manuscript collections in MASC.
  • Clarifies patrons’ research needs and provides required documentation or useful citations.
  • Provides reference services for manuscript and archival collections.
  • Provides instruction to classes and groups visiting MASC.
  • Works as a liaison between MASC and WSU faculty and others to provide specialized and general information about manuscript collections.
  • Assists with collection development and donor relations.
  • Supervises the work of temporary employees.

 Scholarship, Service, & Professional Development:

  • Maintains current awareness of trends and developments in the area of archives, manuscripts, and special collections by reading professional literature, participating in professional organizations and committees, and attending workshops, institutes, seminars and conferences at local, state, regional, national and international levels.
  • Conducts research for publication and presentation in areas of library and information science or other scholarly subjects.
  • Shares with library colleagues and department faculty and staff relevant information gained from professional activities and uses that knowledge to improve departmental operations.
  • Serves on library working groups, search committees, standing committees, and ad hoc groups as appropriate.
  • Serves on WSU university committees and task forces.

 Required Qualifications:

American Library Association accredited masters’ degree in library/information science at date of hire; minimum of one year of special collections experience, preferably in an academic or research library; experience managing library or archival collections, procedures, digitization workflows and content management systems; familiarity with current theories and trends in digital library initiatives, digital curation, and ethical curation practices; excellent interpersonal, verbal, written, organizational, problem-solving and planning skills; ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively both as a team member and independently and to promote teamwork among colleagues; ability to work with diverse sets of stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated knowledge of ArchivesSpace or other archival collection management tools; professional or cultural experience with outreach to communities; experience with archives metadata standards; second Masters or other graduate degree.

Compensation/Benefits:

The salary range is $65,479-$68,500/annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Washington State University has comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, life, and long-term disability insurance, in addition to excellent retirement programs and a generous leave program.
