About this Position

This Web Developer position for ELT serves as a technical developer responsible for overseeing the setup, configuration, and long-term strategy of web infrastructure and applications.

The Web Developer serves as a creative problem-solver with experience and skills building Drupal-powered sites, large scale site planning, and back-end web development. The Web Developer designs, maintains, and constantly improves our Drupal environment, as part of the University’s enterprise system, collaboratively developing solutions with the central Drupal team and online engagement opportunities for web audiences.

As part of a small but experienced technology team, the Web Developer is responsible for collaboratively implementing Extension’s online vision for outreach, advocacy, and education via creative use and integration of University-supported tools and data.

Web development in Extension solves challenges ranging from online information and education delivery, to distributed publishing, to system stability. This position is critical to providing the development services needed to accomplish modern outreach priorities in a large organization.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Web Developer (60%)

  • Responsible for designing and implementing new features and functionality, establishing and guiding the website’s architecture, ensuring high-performance and availability, and managing all technical aspects of the CMS. Work closely with front-end developer to ensure an effective, visually appealing, and intuitive implementation.
  • Testing, maintenance and troubleshooting of existing organizational sites
  • Stays up-to-date on the U’s Drupal Platform, informs Extension of relevant new technologies or changes, and passes feedback to central Drupal team on Extension needs
  • Develops and maintains technical documentation for CMS implementation, applications, and relevant business processes. Train users and team members as necessary.
  • Informs the web development project prioritization/portfolio for Extension’s web sites.
  • Evaluates, recommends, and implements web infrastructure/platform changes and improvements.

Web system architecture and development (30%)

  • Informs decisions on Extension’s web system architecture, configuration, web services, and applications infrastructure
  • Ensures Extension and University security and stability requirements are met regarding web and applications management.
  • Maintains, troubleshoots legacy online and business applications, as needed
  • Provides expertise to project teams on complex technical design and systems integration projects.
  • Fosters IT partnerships and relationships throughout the University to continue to streamline Extension operations by leveraging central resources.
  • Perform general server and database administration tasks (as backup to systems administrator).

Project Management (10%)

  • Develops strong relationships to aid in understanding the varying needs around a project. Applies gathered requirements to web and application-based solutions.
  • Ensures Extension’s application projects are developed effectively and efficiently, using unambiguous project goals and expectations,
  • Manages any outsourced application and database development.
  • Documents and communicates project barriers and status to product owners, end users, and leadership.

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree in MIS, computer science, or a closely related field AND TWO YEARS of progressively more responsible professional experience in web development,
    OR
    BA/BS in any field AND FOUR YEARS of professional experience in web development
  • Experience developing web solutions in content management systems
  • Experience building responsive websites using HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript/jQuery
  • Experience building web applications in PHP, preferably 7.2+ in Object-Oriented frameworks like Symfony or Laravel
  • Experience with version control, preferably Git
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective, respectful, trusting relationships with diverse coworkers and collaborators; including but not limited to relationships with people who are culturally, economically, generationally, politically, and ideologically diverse.
  • Strong verbal/written English communication skills

Additional Requirements

  • Personal cell phone that can be used, as needed, for work purposes and published in the Extension public staff directory.
  • Must have reliable internet if/when working outside of assigned office location.
  • Must be able to work regularly at a dedicated/assigned Extension office.
     

Preferred Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree in MIS, computer science or a closely related field
  • Experience in advanced site-building in Drupal and creating custom modules
  • Experience consuming and building REST APIs
  • Knowledge of WCAG 2.0 and Section 508 standards and guidelines for developing and validating accessible web pages
  • Comfortable using and running open source technologies in a Windows environment
  • Knowledge of modern JavaScript tooling (NPM, WebPack, etc) and frameworks (React/Vue)
  • Experience with Docker for local development, including building custom containers
  • Experience with non-relational data systems and search index technologies, Apache Solr or ElasticSearch
  • Knowledge of SEO coding best practices
  • Experience independently managing projects
  • Ability to participate in a cross-functional team environment and a distributed organization
