Washington, DC – The Association of Public and Land-grant Universities’ (APLU) Council of 1890 Universities this week named the 2015 recipients of its 1890 Teaching, Research and Innovation Awards. Now in its third year, the annual honors recognize advances in teaching, research and innovation on 1890 university campuses and encourage further advancement and development in areas of critical importance. The awards were presented during a special reception at the 128th APLU Annual Meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Indianapolis, IN – A report released today from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) Task Force on Tenure, Promotion, and Technology Transfer today called for public research universities to formally consider, when relevant, faculty involvement in technology transfer activities as part of tenure and promotion decisions. With many research universities placing an increased emphasis on the economic development dimension of their mission, the task force noted it is appropriate for faculty activities in technology transfer to be considered according to quality criteria as are published research papers and other activities included in faculty advancement decisions.

Indianapolis, IN — At its 128th Annual Meeting in Indianapolis, the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) today named Morgan State University the winner of its 2015 Project Degree Completion Award. The annual award identifies and honors institutions that employ innovative methods or programs to increase retention and graduation outcomes and/or close achievement gaps for all students or specific groups of students. Morgan State will receive a $15,000 prize to help expand and magnify its successful retention and degree completion efforts.

Indianapolis, IN – The Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) today named winners of its fourth annual Innovation & Economic Prosperity (IEP) University Awards. The winners — Clemson University, the University of Minnesota, Auburn University and the University of Maryland — competed in four different categories that recognize different components of economic engagement. The categories are talent, innovation, place and connections. The awards, which honor public universities actively engaged in and promoting regional economic development, were awarded on the final day of the APLU Annual Meeting now underway in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Indianapolis, IN – Portland State University and Florida International University today won a combined $165,000 in grants to expand the reach of their innovative student advising effort success efforts. The schools were the winners of the University Pitch Challenge at the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities Annual Meeting in Indianapolis.

In recognition of extraordinary community outreach, the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) today named San José State University (SJSU) the winner of the 2015 C. Peter Magrath Community Engagement Scholarship Award. The Magrath Award was presented at the APLU Annual Meeting, now underway in Indianapolis, IN.

Indianapolis, IN – The Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) today announced its 2016 Board of Directors. At a ceremony during the association’s 128th Annual Meeting, University of Kansas Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little became Chair of the Board, taking over for Clemson University President James P. Clements. The Board of Directors provides oversight and direction for APLU’s work and is charged with setting membership and governing policies for the association. Board members work to make public institutions of higher education more effective in delivering high quality and affordable higher education alongside cutting-edge research and robust community and economic engagement.

Indianapolis, IN –The Voluntary System of Accountability (VSA) today launched College Portraits At A Glance, a new interactive tool for users to create one-page customized snapshots of College Portrait data. The inaugural version of At A Glance features 13 modules with College Portrait data covering student admissions, enrollment, costs and financial aid, success and progress and student experiences – allowing VSA participants with published College Portraits to start using At A Glance immediately.

Indianapolis, IN – The Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) today announced at its 128th Annual Meeting that it received a $4.6 million grant to support a cohort of public universities as they scale implementation of adaptive courseware across their campuses to improve student learning outcomes and accelerate degree completion. The award to APLU comes from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Indianapolis, IN – The Coalition of Urban Serving Universities (USU) and the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) have partnered with the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) to develop and pilot a tool to help universities measure institutional culture and climate, with the goal of creating a more inclusive campus community that values and supports diversity. The self-assessment tool will be paired with a scorecard to provide university leaders with a visually-appealing snapshot of the institution’s progress. The California Wellness Foundation (Cal Wellness) awarded the groups a $325,000 grant over three years to support the initiative and pilot a tool at California institutions.
