Washington, DC – In an effort to help diversify the nation’s health workforce and address persistent gaps in health equity, Urban Universities for HEALTH (Health Equity through Alignment, Leadership, and Transformation of the Health workforce) launched an initiative on Monday, June 26 to help universities design and track evidence-based approaches aimed at building a more diverse and culturally competent health care workforce that better serves communities in need. Urban Universities for HEALTH is a joint initiative of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU), the Association of American Medical Colleges, and the Coalition of Urban Serving Universities that is funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Washington, DC – In advance of the Senate Judiciary Committee’s hearing entitled, ‘Free Speech 101: The Assault on the First Amendment on College Campuses,’ Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) President Peter McPherson sent a letter to Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Ranking Member Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), detailing public universities’ strong commitment to the free exchange of ideas on campus. McPherson also sent a copy of the letter to every member of the Senate Judiciary Committee for their review before tomorrow’s hearing.

Washington, DC — Recognizing the valuable but often overlooked role that community organizations play in partnering with universities to improve student success, the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) and Coalition of Urban Serving Universities (USU) today announced grants to 12 public universities to scale-up emerging partnerships the institutions have undertaken with community stakeholders. The awards, known as Collaborative Opportunity Grants, support innovative approaches that link student success with an institution’s community engagement.

Washington, DC – Campus police departments that use body-worn cameras (BWCs) on campus officers stand to benefit from increased transparency and accountability along with improved community relations, according to a new policy brief the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) issued today. In encouraging universities to consider implementing or piloting a BWC program, APLU cautioned that institutions should carefully consider a host of other factors, including cost and policies for use and storage of footage, before deciding whether to proceed.
