Washington, DC – Aiming to boost students’ sense of belonging so they have the supportive learning environment needed to thrive, the Student Experience Project (SEP) today released a First Day Toolkit to help faculty use evidence-based practices to revise their course syllabi to advance student success. The toolkit, which is informed by a pilot of such a revision process with nearly 300 instructors from 16 institutions that demonstrated a significant positive impact, includes a self-paced, video-based syllabus revision module, a syllabus review guide, a workshop facilitation guide, and more to help faculty and institutions easily put the research into practice.

Washington, DC – APLU today announced that Mark P. Becker, former president of Georgia State University and lifelong champion of equity and student success, will serve as the next president of the association, effective September 1, 2022. Becker will succeed Peter McPherson, who announced last year that he would retire after more than 16 years as president.

Washington, DC – Seeking to help universities across the country overcome challenges stemming from common institutional inflection points, the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) and Coalition of Urban Serving Universities (USU) today released three roadmaps examining how urban-located universities can turn the challenges presented during institutional mergers, leadership transitions, and new performance-based state funding models into opportunities to advance equity and institutional transformation. The in-depth studies and roadmaps are the culmination of nearly six years of intensive work by APLU, USU, Florida International University, Georgia State University, and Portland State University as part of the Frontier Set initiative funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Washington, DC – Federal emergency pandemic relief funding provided critical support to students and public universities amid a global public health emergency, according to a new analysis from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) released today. The analysis finds public research universities have spent the vast majority of federal pandemic relief funding they received to meet students’ basic needs, mitigate the spread of COVID-19, and shift to digital then hybrid instruction formats with unprecedented speed.
