Washington, DC – Seeking to spur key, systemic changes on campuses to boost equitable student success across the higher education sector, the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) and Coalition of Urban Serving Universities (USU) today launched an open-access online course aimed at guiding higher education faculty, staff, and leaders through vital elements of institutional transformation. The course draws on the lessons of nearly six years of intensive examination of the process of institutional transformation at three public urban research universities, Florida International University, Georgia State University-Perimeter College, and Portland State University, as part of the Frontier Set project funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Washington, DC – Aiming to boost students’ sense of belonging so they have the supportive learning environment needed to thrive, the Student Experience Project (SEP) today released a First Day Toolkit to help faculty use evidence-based practices to revise their course syllabi to advance student success. The toolkit, which is informed by a pilot of such a revision process with nearly 300 instructors from 16 institutions that demonstrated a significant positive impact, includes a self-paced, video-based syllabus revision module, a syllabus review guide, a workshop facilitation guide, and more to help faculty and institutions easily put the research into practice.

Washington, DC – Seeking to help universities across the country overcome challenges stemming from common institutional inflection points, the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) and Coalition of Urban Serving Universities (USU) today released three roadmaps examining how urban-located universities can turn the challenges presented during institutional mergers, leadership transitions, and new performance-based state funding models into opportunities to advance equity and institutional transformation. The in-depth studies and roadmaps are the culmination of nearly six years of intensive work by APLU, USU, Florida International University, Georgia State University, and Portland State University as part of the Frontier Set initiative funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Washington, DC – Aiming to address racial injustice and inequity through university-city partnerships, the Coalition of Urban Serving Universities (USU) today named Portland State University as a Racial Justice and Equity Program Award Winner. In partnership with local non-profit organizations, Portland State will focus on increasing university diversity and inclusion through the development of a leadership academy to cultivate personal and professional development of employees from minoritized backgrounds.

Washington, DC – Addressing the national need to broaden diversity and increase inclusion in STEM fields and higher education leadership, the Aspire Alliance’s Institutional Change Initiative (IChange) today announced the third cohort of fellows in its IAspire Leadership Academy. The academy is part of the Aspire Alliance’s Institutional Change Initiative, which the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) and the University of Georgia lead, and aims to support STEM faculty from underrepresented backgrounds ascend to leadership roles at colleges and universities.
