Washington, DC – Despite significant gains in recent years, not enough African American and Hispanic students are earning engineering degrees in the United States to fill the growing demand for high tech workers, according to a new report released today from APLU. The publication, which pulled data from the 2010-11 to 2015-16 academic years, is unique in its approach to examine trends in engineering degrees by subdiscipline, race, gender, and degree level on the national and institutional level.

Washington, DC – Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) President Peter McPherson yesterday wrote to Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch and Ranking Member Ron Wyden detailing strong concerns that public research universities have with provisions in the version of the Tax Cut and Jobs Act that the Senate Finance Committee is expected to markup this week. The letter, which was also sent to each House and Senate office, notes that those provisions would ultimately impact the services students receive and tuition they pay, and impede efforts to develop the highly-skilled workforce needed to propel our nation’s economy forward.

Washington, DC – As college and university leaders continue to innovate new ways to help more students stay in school and graduate, a broad consensus is growing about how holistic, campus-wide, proactive advising systems are driving student success in significant ways. But implementing such systems, which often involves changes to institutional structures, policies and practices while integrating the use of technology and data analytics, can be complicated, costly and time consuming. While some schools have excelled at employing these systems, frequently referred to as Integrated Planning and Advising for Student Success (IPASS), many institutions find themselves aware of the vast benefits, but uncertain of how to proceed with implementing such a system on their own campus.
