Washington, DC – The National Academy of Inventors (NAI) has awarded the distinction of NAI Fellow to 155 renowned innovators and inventors. Seventy-four fellows named in the class of 2017 are from APLU institutions.

Tomorrow the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will vote on the draft Declaratory Ruling, Report and Order, Restoring Internet Freedom, reversing the 2015 Open Internet order, commonly known as the net neutrality rules. The draft Restoring Internet Freedom order reverses classification of mobile and fixed broadband internet access services as common carrier services, implements a “transparency only” net neutrality regime at the FCC, and eliminates the existing bright line prohibitions on blocking, throttling, and paid prioritization, which is the general conduct standard to evaluate potential threats to an open Internet.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is seeking applications for a five-year, $70 million cooperative agreement with a U.S. university to establish a strong international network to solve pressing development challenges through research. The university-led network will work with USAID to engage academics and stakeholders in identifying and refining critical development research questions. The project will fund research that engages universities, policymakers, and civil society to achieve maximum development impact. Finally, the network aims to increase the human and institutional capacity of higher education institutions in low- and middle-income countries – with the aim of forging stronger ties between U.S. and low- and middle- income country universities.

The University of California San Diego, Kansas State University, and the University of New Hampshire have been named APLU Innovation and Economic Prosperity University designees. Leaders from all three campuses were recognized during the 2017 APLU Annual Meeting in Washington, DC for their exemplary work in economic engagement.
