APLU President McPherson Receives the President’s Global Leadership Award from the University of South Florida

Last week, APLU President Peter McPherson received the President’s Global Leadership Award from the University of South Florida during the institution’s fall commencement ceremonies. The award is the highest recognition the University of South Florida bestows to individuals for their contributions and accomplishments in international affairs.

In naming President McPherson the 2016 President’s Global Leadership Award winner, University of South Florida President Judy Genshaft cited his “extraordinary contributions as a world humanitarian, higher education leader, and public policy advocate.”

Since he became president of APLU in 2006, APLU has expanded its role in international education. APLU has been a consistent and steadfast supporter of study abroad. APLU has also created an Institutional Award for Global Learning, Research, and Engagement – recognizing public universities that undertake extraordinary global engagement efforts. And this year, APLU launched a Challenge of Change Commission to examine to how public universities can realign their work to help end global hunger by 2050 even as the world population continues to rise.

Before leading APLU, President McPherson served as administrator of the United States Agency for International Development during the Reagan administration and later as president of Michigan State University.
