Magna Charta Universitatum, an organization committed to advancing academic freedom and service to society, is holding its annual conference in Hamilton, ON, Canada October 16 and 17. The group, which includes nearly 900 universities across 88 countries, is focusing this year’s annual conference on academic freedom and universities’ responsibilities in meeting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Register now for the conference and learn more about how your institution can join the Magna Charta Universitatum.
The 2019 annual conference will take place in North America for the first time and be hosted by McMaster University in Hamilton, ON. The dual themes of the conference will be academic freedom and the responsibilities universities have for helping to achieve the UN sustainable development goals, particularly those relevant to sustainable cities.
The conference will comprise two keynote addresses and then a menu of participative workshops supporting the main themes. This conference will address these critically important issues in a way that will stimulate discussion and enable active workshop session participation. It will do so in coordination with regional and global associations, including the International Association of Universities and Scholars at Risk. The conference will not only benefit participants and their universities, but also inform the development of a new Magna Charta Universitatum to reflect the changes and challenges which universities are facing. More details on the conference can be found here and details of how to register can be found here.
On October 17, the day following the conference, there will be an opportunity for universities that are not yet signatories to join the growing global group. Details of how to apply to sign can be found here. If you have any questions about this please email firstname.lastname@example.org
The MCU, in its current and emerging new form, will continue to serve as a tool to integrate different cultural and knowledge backgrounds and enable universities to work together globally. The McMaster event will be a great opportunity to show that university values continue to play a major role in university life and its service to the development of our society.
Further information about the programme and the registration will soon be available on the Magna Charta Observatory website.
