Tag Demment, APLU’s Vice President for International Programs, Announces Retirement. APLU Actively Seeking Candidates to Fill the Role

Tag Demment, APLU’s Vice President for International Programs, announced that he will retire at the end of the calendar year.

Demment has played a critical role at APLU in advocacy, including his work for the United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Feed the Future Innovation Labs Innovation Labs. When he arrived at APLU, funding for the program was set to decline to $13 million a year. With some ongoing advocacy, the Innovation Labs now receive about $55 million a year.

Demment also, in collaboration with Anne-Claire Hervy, established the African Higher Education Initiative that resulted in 11 partnerships between U.S. and African universities. More recently, he spearheaded a commission that produced the Challenge of Change: Harnessing University Discovery, Engagement, and Learning to Achieve Food and Nutritional Security report, a publication that defined the challenges to feed the world in 2050 and how universities need to change to successfully address those challenges.

“I have appreciated Tag’s work with the Commission for International Initiatives (CII) and its International Agriculture Section (IAS),” said APLU President Peter McPherson. “We’ll miss Tag and his passion for the land-grant mission, but we congratulate him on his retirement.”

APLU is now actively searching for candidates interested in serving in the role of Vice President for International Programs.
