A University of Utah program that helps facilitate connections with underserved west side communities recently won a $20,000 prize for its outreach efforts. University Neighborhood Partners won the C. Peter Magrath Community Engagement Scholarship Award presented by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities as announced during the association's annual meeting on Wednesday.

The Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) named Northern Arizona University the winner of its 2020 Degree Completion Award during a ceremony at its annual meeting Monday in Washington, D.C. The annual award recognizes institutions that employ innovative and evidence-based approaches to improve degree completion while ensuring educational quality.

APLU’s IEP Universities designation program recognizes institutions committed to university economic development and helps higher education institutions advance their support of economic and community development. “UTEP has long identified as a community-engaged institution,” said John Wiebe, Ph.D., provost and vice president for academic affairs. “This designation recognizes our commitment not only to the educational, cultural and social prosperity of the region, but it speaks to the hard work of our faculty, staff and students to build UTEP’s role as an economic anchor for the community.”
