The Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU) and Association for Institutional Research (AIR) have selected Oakland University as one of 12 universities to take part in a nationwide initiative to further student success goals by increasing data literacy on campus. Facilitated through the APLU’s Powered by Publics initiative, OU and other universities will have 20 staff and faculty members trained by the AIR’s Data Literacy Institute on how to read and analyze data.

It’s not hard to find folks in higher education talking about the challenges of getting more rural students to and through college. It’s the solutions that are more elusive. Yet after I wrote about this issue in a newsletter last fall, readers helped to connect me to several ideas worth highlighting. Most notable: Some colleges are beginning to consider their rural students as a separate demographic group and are consciously devising services, such as internships and orientations, especially designed for them. Likewise, I heard about some cool examples in response to my specific question about strategies for improving broadband access, which is one of the biggest and most-obvious barriers right now.

The University of Arkansas, Fayetteville is among 20 public research institutions to recently join a National Science Foundation-funded effort to increase diversity among faculty members in science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines. UA has similar numbers of women and minority engineering faculty members compared with other large public universities in the region, according to data compiled by the American Society for Engineering Education.

West Virginia University in Morgantown is set to offer next semester a new benefit believed to retain students, and if the program works, it could be adopted at WVU Tech in Beckley. The implementation of "completion grants" is set to help fill the gap between checkbooks and commencement, and WVU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Maryanne Reed said school officials continue to see the unmet financial need which continues to be a barrier of completion for some WVU students.

He said he is proud of Ohio State’s progress during his tenure and that the timing was right for both his family and the university. Ohio State University President Michael V. Drake will retire next year after six years at the helm of the state’s flagship university.

Dr. Michael V. Drake, who made history in 2014 when he was named the first African-American president of The Ohio State University, announced on Thursday that he will retire from the post at the end of the 2019-2020 academic school year. He and his wife Brenda will stay in the Columbus area and Drake will remain on the OSU faculty.

Public universities are serving their students, communities, and society at large in a variety of ways. They provide access to college and work to ensure every student who enrolls in college leaves with a life-changing degree in hand. They undertake public-impact research. They drive economic development through innovation and collaboration with the private sector. They work with communities across the globe to solve pressing societal challenges. And they instill a sense of civic responsibility in their students.

MU has joined a national alliance to develop inclusive faculty practices in its STEM departments, the university announced Monday. The alliance, Aspire: The National Alliance for Inclusive and Diverse STEM Faculty, will focus on recruitment, hiring and retention of diverse science, technology, engineering and math faculty. MU is one of 20 universities joining the Aspire Alliance, which will last for three years.

A report on the state of rural education came out last week, asserting that some schools and places “face nothing less than an emergency in the education and well-being of children.” Part of that emergency is the low level of “college readiness” in many of these rural districts, which enroll nearly one in five public-school students in the United States.

Focusing on rurality across race and ethnicity in the United States was among the many sessions that brought scholars, grant makers and policy leaders together for the 44th annual Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE). This year’s theme, “The Will to Reimagine the Study of Higher Education,” called on scholars in the academy to translate their research into policy and practice.
