APLU’s Powered by Publics (PxP) initiative regularly brings the public university community and others together to share key lessons from the initiative in its participating students in the areas of Affordability, Teaching & Learning, and Holistic Student Supports. These forums provide a initiative-wide opportunity to listen and learn about scaling pathbreaking innovations that advance student success.
In this interactive webinar, leaders from two Powered by Publics clusters share how they use Curricular Analytics to assess equity gaps, engage faculty around the results, and catalyze changes to the curriculum. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and engage in discussion around the potential use of this tool in program review, as well as strategies for improving student success and obtaining buy-in from faculty.
The Data Literacy Institute, a collaboration between APLU and the Association of Institutional Research (AIR), was designed to bring together a cross-functional team of professionals who work together to analyze data to solve a single student success problem on their campus. During this webinar, some institutions share the results of their work and others talk about their efforts in building a data literacy program on their campus.
The Data Literacy Institute – a partnership between APLU and the Association for Institutional Research with funding from Ascendium – brings together cross-departmental teams from 11 Powered by Publics institutions to engage in training that enhance their use of data to improve equitable student outcomes. In May 2022, Powered by Publics held a Data Literacy Institute convening sharing what was learned and experiences from the first cohort of the Institute. Powered by Publics aims to share learning and experiences across the network and to scale promising solutions for improving student success.
APLU held the Powered by Publics Annual Meeting in November 2021. The meeting explored what Powered by Publics institutions are doing to advance equity and the use of data while exploring issues in the Learning Hub areas of Affordability, Teaching and Learning, and Holistic Student Supports.
APLU and the TIAA Institute hosted a Powered by Publics-wide convening exploring research on college affordability innovations. The first session explored financial aid innovation for affordability and student debt. Don’t have time to watch the video? This Powered by Publics Learning Event is a workshop on building students’ financial confidence through coaching-based advising, led by Dr. Kathleen Shea Smith. While concerns around financial aid, working, and paying for college are common among undergraduates, comfort in discussing these concerns in advising can vary from student to student or from advisor to advisor. These conversations provide a powerful opportunity to address the whole student experience, including financial well-being.
In their work together as part of APLU’s Powered by Publics initiative, the Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA) cluster is examining student course data and the practices and policies affecting success rates in entry-level courses, with an emphasis on closing achievement gaps for historically underserved student populations.
In Fall 2021, six universities in the Metropolitan Cluster of APLU’s Powered by Publics initiative are piloting proactive advising efforts to increase student success among Pell Grant-eligible students. Learn more about their work in this video.
Even once enrolled, the path to a college degree can be dizzyingly complex for students – which can lead to more time in college, added costs or debt, and even a student dropping out altogether. That’s why Powered by Publics institutions are working to examine the course path to a degree and identify – and eliminate – unnecessary barriers that can needlessly complicate a student’s path to a degree.
