Our Work

Education Abroad

APLU has long been involved in advocacy for education abroad. We are working with our members to synthesize existing and collect new data on the academic and career outcomes of the education abroad experience. APLU is also discussing a mechanism to assist institutions in growing study abroad participation substantially beyond current levels and strengthening the quality of education abroad programs. APLU is also active with foreign governments and their higher education institutions, and with President Obama’s foreign exchange initiatives to increase education abroad opportunities. In 2005, Peter McPherson chaired the Commission on the Abraham Lincoln Study Abroad Fellowship Program. APLU also leads an ongoing advocacy effort in support of the Senator Paul Simon Study Abroad Foundation Act which was first introduced in 2007.

Chartered by Congress and Chaired by APLU President, Peter McPherson, the Commission on the Abraham Lincoln Study Abroad Fellowship Program, released a report in 2005 outlining how the United States could achieve the goal of one million U.S. students studying abroad annually. As recommended in the report, legislation was introduced, the Senator Paul Simon Study Abroad Act, which would significantly increase the number of study abroad participants by creating a competitive grants program in which institutions of higher education would compete with the best ideas on how they can increase their numbers, expand the diversity of participants, and expand the diversity of destinations including developing nations. APLU, working with our partners at NAFSA: Association of International Educators, remains committed to passage of the Simon Act both in authorization and appropriations.
