Our Work

Mexico Academic Mobility Assessment Committee

The purpose of the Mexico Academic Mobility Assessment Committee (MAMAC) is to evaluate trends in existing information regarding travel in Mexico, including security, best practices and the state of collaboration on academic travel issues. The committee will develop mechanisms for educating U.S. and Canadian universities regarding the ability to work or study in Mexico and to ensure the most open and effective travel practices.

MAMAC will study existing state of U.S. State Department travel warnings and advisories and determine whether Canadian universities face a similar travel warning or advisory rubric. The committee will determine mechanisms for gathering information on current travel risk and examine travel risk assessment and insurance issues for a range of U.S. and/or Canadian educational institutions with regard to work or travel in Mexico.

The committee will also identify sound practices regarding risk assessment and institutional travel policies and develop a set of recommendations regarding these issues as appropriate, and publicize findings and sound practices. MAMAC will also develop a continuing assessment and communication process including the development and maintenance of a website of publicized results, findings, recommendations and sound practices.

These efforts will be facilitated by the University of Arizona, in Tucson, Arizona. Current committee members include Suzanne Panferov Reese (Chair), University of Arizona; Britta Baron, University of Alberta, Canada; James L. Citron, Dartmouth University; Exequiel Ezcurra, University of California Institute for Mexico and the United States; Ahmad Ezzeddine, Wayne State University; Magdaleno Manzanarez, Western New Mexico University; Karl Markgraf, Virginia Tech; Anny Morrobel-Sosa, Lehman College, and David Vassar, Rice University. In addition, the committee will work to engage other educational institutions and organizations in the initiative.
