State, Foreign Operations, and Related Agencies

Appropriations within the State and Foreign Operations bill provide essential funding to develop strong U.S. university and developing country university partnerships. Further, appropriations that support USAID’s Feed the Future Innovation Labs help tackle some of the world’s most challenging agriculture problems. The current 25 Feed the Future Food Security Innovation Labs involve more than 60 U.S. universities throughout the nation and solve critical agricultural problems that impact food security and poverty through research conducted collaboratively between U.S. and developing country students and scientists. The program also promotes a path to self-reliance and resilience by strengthening the capacity of developing country research institutions and scientists. APLU also supports additional funding for the U.S. Department of State’s study abroad initiatives–Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, the Critical Language Scholarship Program, and the Capacity Building Program–aimed at providing opportunities for underserved and diverse student populations, equipping students with the necessary tools required for critical second language acquisitions, and expanding study abroad initiatives across the United States.
