University of Colorado Denver

The Emmanuel Art Gallery has been the heart of one of Denver’s most diverse neighborhoods for the past 150 years. Built in 1876, the structure was first an Episcopalian Chapel. As the community changed and grew, it was converted into the Shearith Israel Synagogue which served a large Jewish community for decades. As the neighborhood changed again, the building first became a private art studio and, in 1973, it became part of University of Colorado Denver. Since then, it has served as a vital part of the city’s art community, drawing thousands from around the world for unique exhibits. The gallery also gives our students hands-on opportunities to show their work and learn how to run a museum. It has become an integral part of the university’s College of Arts & Media, producing graduates who work at some of the best galleries around the country. To celebrate the 150th anniversary, the gallery is hosting an event to share the building’s history and impact that continues today. Learn more
