Scott Powell to Join APLU as CFO on January 6

Following an extensive search and interview process, APLU is pleased to announce that Scott Powell will serve as its new Chief Financial Officer (CFO) effective January 6, 2020.

Powell brings a wealth of experience to APLU. Since 2017, he has served as CFO at So Others May Eat (SOME), a non-profit working to address poverty and homelessness. He previously served as Controller at SOME for nearly a decade. During his time at SOME, Powell managed a growing budget of more than $35 million that supports 12 subsidiary companies and over 50 programs. He has played a leading role in the organization’s budgeting, compliance, auditing, risk mitigation, revenue diversification, grant management, and investment efforts. He also oversaw SOME’s IT Department. Powell’s excellent experience also includes a long career at the accounting firm Ernst & Young. Powell earned a B.S. in accounting from University of Maryland University College.

Powell will be replacing Emily van Loon, who announced in October that she would retire from her role as CFO and Treasurer at the end of January 2020 (she will be overlapping with Powell for several weeks). Her eight-year tenure has been marked by strong financial controls and major contributions to the great expansion of APLU’s grant-funded and programmatic work. In addition to her extraordinary financial work, van Loon’s positive and upbeat attitude was felt across the APLU office.
